Psalms 130

Out of the Depths
A song of the stairway
1Lord, I cry out to you out of the depths of my despair!
2Hear my voice, O God!
Answer this prayer and hear my plea for mercy.
3Lord, if you measured us and marked us with our sins,
who would ever have their prayers answered?
4But your forgiving love is what makes you so wonderful.
No wonder you are loved and worshiped!
5This is why I wait upon you, expecting your breakthrough,
for your Word brings me hope.
6I long for you more than any watchman
would long for the morning light.
I will watch and wait for you, O God,
throughout the night.
7O Israel, keep hoping, keep trusting,
and keep waiting on the Lord,
for he is tenderhearted, kind, and forgiving.
He has a thousand ways to set you free!
8He himself will redeem you;
he will ransom you from the cruel slavery of your sins!

Prayer for Pardon and Mercy
1A song of ascents.
I
Out of the depths#The depths: Sheol here is a metaphor of total misery. Deep anguish makes the psalmist feel “like those descending to the pit” (Ps 143:7). I call to you, Lord;
2Lord, hear my cry!
May your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.#Ps 5:2–3; 55:2–3; 86:6; Lam 3:55–56; Jon 2:3.
3If you, Lord, keep account of sins,
Lord, who can stand?#Na 1:6.
4But with you is forgiveness
and so you are revered.#And so you are revered: the experience of God’s mercy leads one to a greater sense of God.
II
5I wait for the Lord,
my soul waits
and I hope for his word.#Ps 119:81.
6My soul looks for the Lord
more than sentinels for daybreak.#Is 21:11; 26:9.
More than sentinels for daybreak,
7let Israel hope in the Lord,
For with the Lord is mercy,
with him is plenteous redemption,#Ps 86:15; 100:5; 103:8.
8And he will redeem Israel
from all its sins.#Ps 25:22; Mt 1:21.
