Psalms 127

God and His Gifts
A song of the stairway by King Solomon
1If God’s grace doesn’t help the builders,
they will labor in vain to build a house.
If God’s mercy doesn’t protect the city,
all the sentries will circle it in vain.
2It really is senseless to work so hard
from early morning till late at night,
toiling to make a living for fear of not having enough.
God can provide for his devoted lovers even while they sleep!
3Children are God’s love-gift; they are heaven’s generous reward.
4Children born to a young couple will one day rise to protect
and provide for their parents. # 127:4 The Hebrew text refers to children as “arrows in the hands of a warrior.” Our children will be our future protection and provision. So the more the merrier!
5Happy will be the couple who has many of them!
A household full of children will not bring shame on your name
but victory when you face your enemies,
for your offspring will have influence and honor # 127:5 The Hebrew includes a reference to “speaking with your enemies at the gate.” This is in the context of children being God’s way of blessing parents in their old age.
to prevail on your behalf!

Psalm 127
A song of ascents. Of Solomon.
1Unless the Lord builds the house,
the builders labour in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the guards stand watch in vain.
2In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat –
for he grants sleep to#127:2 Or eat – / for while they sleep he provides for those he loves.
3Children are a heritage from the Lord,
offspring a reward from him.
4Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are children born in one’s youth.
5Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their opponents in court.
