God and His Gifts
A song of the stairway by King Solomon
1If God’s grace doesn’t help the builders,
they will labor in vain to build a house.
If God’s mercy doesn’t protect the city,
all the sentries will circle it in vain.
2It really is senseless to work so hard
from early morning till late at night,
toiling to make a living for fear of not having enough.
God can provide for his devoted lovers even while they sleep!
3Children are God’s love-gift; they are heaven’s generous reward.
4Children born to a young couple will one day rise to protect
and provide for their parents. # 127:4 The Hebrew text refers to children as “arrows in the hands of a warrior.” Our children will be our future protection and provision. So the more the merrier!
5Happy will be the couple who has many of them!
A household full of children will not bring shame on your name
but victory when you face your enemies,
for your offspring will have influence and honor # 127:5 The Hebrew includes a reference to “speaking with your enemies at the gate.” This is in the context of children being God’s way of blessing parents in their old age.
to prevail on your behalf!

A song from Solomon for going up to the Temple.
1If it is not the Lord who builds a house,
the builders are wasting their time.
If it is not the Lord who watches over the city,
the guards are wasting their time.
2It is a waste of time to get up early and stay up late,
trying to make a living.
The Lord provides for those he loves,
even while they are sleeping.
3Children are a gift#127:3 gift Literally, “inheritance.” This usually means the land God gave to each family in Israel. from the Lord,
a reward from a mother’s womb.
4A young man’s sons
are like the arrows in a soldier’s hand.
5The man who fills his quiver with sons
will be very blessed.
He will never be defeated
when he opposes his enemy at the city gates.#127:5 city gates This can refer to either a battle to protect the city or to a court case held in this public place.
