God and His Gifts
A song of the stairway by King Solomon
1If God’s grace doesn’t help the builders,
they will labor in vain to build a house.
If God’s mercy doesn’t protect the city,
all the sentries will circle it in vain.
2It really is senseless to work so hard
from early morning till late at night,
toiling to make a living for fear of not having enough.
God can provide for his devoted lovers even while they sleep!
3Children are God’s love-gift; they are heaven’s generous reward.
4Children born to a young couple will one day rise to protect
and provide for their parents. # 127:4 The Hebrew text refers to children as “arrows in the hands of a warrior.” Our children will be our future protection and provision. So the more the merrier!
5Happy will be the couple who has many of them!
A household full of children will not bring shame on your name
but victory when you face your enemies,
for your offspring will have influence and honor # 127:5 The Hebrew includes a reference to “speaking with your enemies at the gate.” This is in the context of children being God’s way of blessing parents in their old age.
to prevail on your behalf!

Psalm 127
A song to sing as we climb.
Solomon wrote this song.
Every good thing comes from God #127:1 Psalm 127 tells us that only God can give us the good things that we need. We need a house to live in and we need food to eat. If we try to use our own strength to do things, it will not really help us. We need to trust God to give us the things that we need.
1The Lord must build your house.
If not, the work of the builders is useless.
The Lord must keep the city safe.
If not, the city guards are useless.
2It will not help you to work all day for food, and never stop.
God gives food to the people that he loves.
Even while they sleep, God takes care of them.
3Children are a gift from the Lord.
He blesses us with descendants.
4If you have sons while you are a young man,
they are like a soldier's arrows.
5If a man has many sons,
God has blessed him. #127:5 A soldier with many arrows can fight well. A man with many children is in a good place. They help him to win against his enemies.
When his enemies speak against him at the city gate,
they will not win. #127:5 The city gate was the place where people met to decide their quarrels.
