Psalms 114
114
A Song for Passover
1Many years ago the Jewish people escaped Egypt’s tyranny,
2so that Israel, God’s people of praise, # 114:2 Or Judah, which means “praise.”
would become his holy sanctuary,
his kingdom on the earth.
3The Red Sea waters saw them coming and ran the other way!
Then later, the Jordan River too
moved aside so that they could all pass through.
4The land shuddered with fear.
Mountains and hills shook with dread. # 114:4 The literal Hebrew reads “Mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs.” This does not mean they skipped with joy, but that they shook with fear, as the context reveals.
5O sea, what happened to you to make you flee?
O Jordan, what was it that made you turn and run?
6O mountains, what frightened you so?
And you hills, what made you shiver?
7Tremble, O earth, for you are in the presence of the Lord,
the presence of the God of Jacob.
8He splits open boulders and brings up bubbling water.
Gushing streams burst forth when he is near!

Psalm 114
Hallelujah, God does great things #114:1 This is the second ‘Egyptian hallel’ psalm. It tells us what happened when the people of Israel left Egypt.
1God led Israel's people out of Egypt.
Jacob's descendants left that foreign land.
2Then Judah became God's special place for his people.
There he ruled over Israel's people.
3The sea looked and ran away!
Then the Jordan River turned back! #114:3 The sea was the Red Sea. It was between Egypt and Canaan. See Exodus 14:10-22 A dry path appeared in the sea. The same thing happened to the Jordan River. See Joshua 3:7-17.
4The mountains shook,
like sheep that are jumping.
The hills jumped like lambs. #114:4 The hills and mountains jumped like animals when the Lord was near. See Exodus 19:18-20.
5Tell me, sea, why did you run away?
Tell me, Jordan River, why did you turn back?
6And you mountains and hills,
why did you jump like sheep?
7Earth, you should shake with fear!
The Lord, Jacob's God, has come to you,
so be afraid!
8He changes a rock into a pool of water!
Water pours out of a hard rock! #114:8 See Exodus 17:1-7; Numbers 20:11.
