Psalms 110
110
Messiah, King, and Priest # 110 This psalm is applied to Christ in the New Testament, where it is quoted more often than any other Old Testament passage.
King David’s psalm
1Yahweh said to my Lord, the Messiah:
“Sit with me as enthroned ruler # 110:1 Or “at my right hand.” The right hand is the position of authority and honor.
while I subdue your every enemy.
They will bow low before you
as I make them a footstool for your feet.” # 110:1 A footstool symbolizes what is subdued. It is taken from the Hebrew root word “to subdue.”
2Messiah, I know God himself will establish your kingdom
as you reign in Zion-glory.
For he says to you, “Rule in the midst of your enemies!”
3Your people will be your love offerings.
In the day of your mighty power you will be exalted,
and in the brightness of your holy ones you will shine
as an army arising from the womb of the dawn,
anointed with the dew of your youth! # 110:3 Or “like dew, your youth will come to you.”
4Yahweh has taken a solemn oath
and will never back away from it, saying,
“You are a priest for eternity, after the manner of Melchizedek!” # 110:4 Melchizedek was the name of a Canaanite king and priest over the Jebusite kingdom that later became Jerusalem. The name Melchizedek means “my king of righteousness.”
5The Lord stands in full authority # 110:5 The Hebrew word used here for “Lord” is Adonai or Adonay. It is the plural form of Adhon. Jesus is called Lord of lords, and we are the lords that he is Lord over. We are seated at his right hand (Benjamin) to rule with him. to shatter to pieces
the kings who stand against you
on the day he displays his terrible wrath.
6He will judge every rebellious nation,
filling their battlefields with corpses,
and will shatter the strongholds of ruling powers.
7Yet he himself will drink from his inheritance
as from a flowing brook;
refreshed by love he will stand victorious!

Psalm 110
David wrote this psalm.
The Lord's great King #110:1 This is a royal psalm. It tells us what God promised to the great king that he has chosen to rule the world.
1The Lord God said to my Lord, #110:1 The Lord is God's own name. ‘My Lord’ means ‘My master’. Jesus used the words from this psalm to show that the Messiah was greater than King David, because David called him ‘my Lord’. See Matthew 22:43-44; Mark 12:36; Luke 20:42-43. Peter also used these words when he spoke to many people after Jesus had died. See Acts 2:34-35.
‘Sit at my right side #110:1 The right side is where the powerful, important person would sit. until I win against your enemies.
Then you will be able to put your feet on them.’
2The Lord will give you great authority,
as you rule from Zion. #110:2 Zion is God's special place where he rules. On earth, it was part of Jerusalem where they built the temple. But heaven is also God's special home, where he rules the world.
You will rule over all your enemies
that are round you.
3When you go to fight your enemies,
your people will be happy to fight beside you.
As the sun rises on the day of battle,
your young men will be there,
on the hills round Zion. #110:3 This verse is difficult to understand in the Hebrew language.
4The Lord has made a strong promise.
He will not change it.
He has promised, ‘You will be a priest for ever,
in the same way that Melchizedek was my priest.’ #110:4 Melchizedek was both a king and a priest, like Jesus. See Genesis 14:18-20. Later, the Israelite priests had to be Levites, so they were not the right family to be kings. Jesus was not a Levite, but he was a priest like Melchizedek.
5The Lord is standing at your right side.
When he becomes angry,
he will knock down kings!
6He will punish the nations,
so that dead bodies cover the ground.
He will destroy kings everywhere on the earth.
7He will drink from a stream at the side of the road.
With new strength, he will lift up his head.
