Psalms 11

Song of the Steadfast
For the Pure and Shining One by King David
The Advice to Flee
1My faith shelters my soul continually in Yahweh.
Why would you say to me:
“Run away while you can!
Fly away like a bird to hide in the mountains for safety.
2For your enemies have prepared a trap for you!
Can’t you see them hiding
in their place of darkness and shadows?
They’re set against all those who live upright lives.
3What can the righteous accomplish
when truth’s pillars are destroyed and law and order collapse?”
The Answer of Faith
4Yet Yahweh is never shaken # 11:4 This is an implied contrast made explicit from the text. This psalm shows the contrast between what can be shaken and what is unshakable. —
he is still found in his temple of holiness,
reigning as King Yahweh over all.
He closely watches and examines everything man does.
With a glance, his eyes # 11:4 The actual Hebrew is “his eyelids.” Some see the “eyelid” as the lid of the ark of the covenant, which was the mercy seat. examine every heart,
for his heavenly rule will prevail over all.
5Yahweh tests both the righteous and the wicked.
God’s very soul detests lovers of violence.
6He will # 11:6 Or “May he.” rain down upon them judgment for their sins.
A scorching wind will be their lot in life.
7But remember this: Yahweh is the Righteous One who loves
justice, and every godly one
will gaze upon his face!

Psalm 11
For the music leader. Of David.
1I have taken refuge in the LORD.
So how can you say to me,#11.1 Or my soul
“Flee to the hills like a bird
2because the wicked
have already bent their bows;
they’ve already strung their arrows;
they are ready to secretly shoot
those whose heart is right”?
3When the very bottom of things falls out,
what can a righteous person possibly accomplish?
4But the LORD is in his holy temple.
The LORD! His throne is in heaven.
His eyes see—
his vision examines all of humanity.
5The LORD examines
both the righteous and the wicked;
his very being#11.5 Or soul hates anyone who loves violence.
6God will rain fiery coals and sulfur on the wicked;
their cups will be filled
with nothing but a scorching hot wind
7because the LORD is righteous!
He loves righteous deeds.
Those whose heart is right will see God’s face.#11.7 Heb lacks heart, but see 11:2 and Pss 7:10; 32:11; 36:10.
