The Resurrection of Jesus
1After the Sabbath ended, at the first light of dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary # 28:1 This was Mary, the mother of Jacob and Joseph. See Mark 16:1; Luke 24:10. went to take a look at the tomb. 2-4Suddenly, the earth shook violently beneath their feet as the angel of the Yahweh # 28:2–4 As translated from the Aramaic. descended from heaven. Lightning flashed around him and his robe was dazzling white! The guards were stunned and terrified—lying motionless like dead men. Then the angel walked up to the tomb, rolled away the stone, and sat on top of it!
5The women were breathless and terrified, until the angel said to them, “There’s no reason to be afraid. I know you’re here looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He isn’t here—he has risen victoriously, # 28:6 As translated from the Aramaic. just as he said! Come inside the tomb and see the place where our Lord was lying. # 28:6 As translated from the Aramaic and some Greek texts. 7Then run and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead! I give you his message: ‘I am going ahead of you to Galilee and you will see me there.’ ” # 28:7 Or ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee and you will see him there. Behold, I have told you!’ ”
8They rushed quickly to tell his disciples, and their hearts were filled with fear, awe, and great joy at the same time.
9Along the way, Jesus suddenly appeared in front of them and said, “Rejoice!” # 28:9 Or “Be rejoicing!” They were so overwhelmed by seeing him that they bowed down and grasped his feet in adoring worship.
10Then Jesus said to them, “Throw off all your fears. Go and tell my brothers # 28:10 What an incredible truth! Believers are now his brothers and sisters. See Heb. 2:11. to go to Galilee. They will find me there.”
The Guards Report What They Witnessed
11After the women left the tomb, a few of the guards went into Jerusalem and told the chief priests everything they had seen and heard. 12So the chief priests called a meeting with all the religious leaders and came up with a plan. They bribed the guards with a large sum of money 13and told them, “Tell everyone, ‘While we were asleep, his disciples came at night and stole his body!’ 14If Pilate finds out about this, don’t worry. We’ll make sure you don’t get blamed.” 15So they took the money and did as they were told. (That is why the story of the guards is still circulated among the Jews to this day.)
The Great Commission
16Meanwhile, the eleven disciples heard the wonderful news from the women and left for Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meet them. 17The moment they saw him, they worshiped him, but some still had lingering doubts.
18Then Jesus came close to them and said, “All authority of the universe has been given to me. # 28:18 There is a sentence found in the Aramaic that is missing in all but one Greek manuscript, which reads, “As my Father has sent me, so I send you.” 19Now wherever you go, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 20And teach them to faithfully follow # 28:20 The Aramaic is “keep” or “guard” (a fortress). all that I have commanded you. And never forget that I am with you every day, even to the completion of this age.” # 28:20 Or “I am with you all the appointed days” (Variorum Version).

Jesus Is Raised
1 Now after the Sabbath, at the dawning on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to view the tomb. 2And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came up and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participles (“descended” and “came up”) have been translated as finite verbs rolled away the stone and sat down#Or “was sitting”; here “sat down” reflects an ingressive nuance (beginning of a process or entry into a state) in the translation of the imperfect verb on it. 3Now his appearance was like lightning and his clothing white as snow. 4And the guards trembled from the fear of him and became like dead men. 5But the angel answered and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“answered”) has been translated as a finite verb said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He is not here, for he has been raised, just as he said. Come, see the place where he was lying. 7And go quickly, tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and behold, he is going ahead of you into Galilee. You will see him there.’ Behold, I have told you.” 8And they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“departed”) has been translated as a finite verb ran to tell his disciples. 9And behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Greetings!” And they came up and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“came up”) has been translated as a finite verb took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid! 11And while#*Here “while” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“were going”) they were going, behold, some of the guard of soldiers went into the city and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“went”) has been translated as a finite verb reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12And after they#*Here “after” is supplied as a component of the participle (“had assembled”) which is understood as temporal had assembled with the elders and had taken counsel, they gave a rather large sum of money to the soldiers, 13telling them,#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation “Say ‘His disciples came during the night and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“came”) has been translated as a finite verb stole him while#*Here “while” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“were sleeping”) we were sleeping.’ 14And if this matter is heard before the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.”#Literally “make you free from care” 15So they took the money and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“took”) has been translated as a finite verb did as they were told, and spread abroad this report among the Jews until this very day.
