60
The Glorious New Day
1“Rise up in splendor and be radiant, # 60:1 Or “break forth with the light of [a new] day.” See Eph. 5:27. Applying vv. 1–2 to the church, we see both Jesus as the Light that shines upon us (see John 8:12; 2 Cor. 4:6) and the church as the light shining upon the nations (see Matt. 5:14–16). for your light has dawned,
and Yahweh’s glory # 60:1 Here Isaiah begins a new section in his masterpiece. The theme of these last seven chapters is “The Glorious New Day,” corresponding to the Feast of Tabernacles. The Hebrew word for “glory” appears twenty-three times in chs. 60–66. A possible outline of these chapters is as follows: A New Day (ch. 60), A New Priesthood (ch. 61), A New Wedding (ch. 62), A New Mercy (ch. 63), A New Prayer (ch. 64), A New Heaven and a New Earth (ch. 65), and A New Jerusalem (ch. 66). now streams from you! # 60:1 Or “is risen like a sunrise upon you.”
2Look carefully! Darkness blankets the earth,
and thick clouds # 60:2 Or “gloom.” covers the nations,
but Yahweh arises upon you # 60:2 Or “breaks out over you.”
and the brightness of his glory appears over you! # 60:2 See Isa. 60:19–22; Mal. 4:2; Rev. 21:2–3.
3Nations will be attracted to your radiant light # 60:3 Or “Nations will walk by your light.” Light is often seen as a biblical metaphor for understanding and revelation. See Eph. 1:18.
and kings to the sunrise-glory of your new day. # 60:3 Or “to the brightness of your sunrise.” The sunrise of our new day came at the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
4Lift up your eyes higher! Look all around you and believe,
for your sons are returning from far away
and your daughters are being tenderly carried home.
Watch as they all gather together, eager to come back to you!”
Zion’s Wealth
5“Then you will see with understanding and be radiant. # 60:5 Or “As you understand you will sparkle.” The Hebrew word nahar can also be translated “flow together.” So this verse could also read “As you understand, you will flow together.”
Your heart will be thrilled and swell with joy.
The fullness of the sea will flow to you # 60:5 This is not simply fish, but the fullness of the nations, the sea of humanity. See Rom. 11:25.
and the wealth # 60:5 Or “forces [armies],” “virtues,” “strength,” “might,” “power,” “riches,” or “goods.” of the nations will be transferred to you!
6Caravans of camels will cover your land,
young camels loaded with goods from Midian # 60:6 Camels were seen as a symbol of wealth. See Judg. 6:5. Midian was a son of Abraham and Keturah who settled near the Gulf of Elath. and Ephah. # 60:6 Ephah was a grandson of Abraham and one of the five sons of Midian.
All the wealthy merchants from Sheba will come,
bearing gold and frankincense
and singing the praises of Yahweh!
7All the flocks of Kedar # 60:7 Kedar was one of Ishmael’s sons, and his tribe became the dominant military power of the Ishmaelites in North Arabia (see Hitti, History of the Arabs, 42). will be gathered to you,
and the rams # 60:7 Rams were brought as consecration offerings for the ordination of priests. See Ex. 29. of Nebaioth # 60:7 Nebaioth was the firstborn son of Ishmael and Esau’s brother-in-law and became a metonymy for the Ishmaelites. See Gen. 28:9; 36:3. will be yours
as acceptable sacrifices on my altar,
and I will adorn with more glory my glorious temple. # 60:7 We are now the glorious temple of God, adorned with even more glory than we can comprehend. See John 17:22; Rom. 8:30; 1 Cor. 3:16–17.
8“Who are these who soar like clouds, # 60:8 See 1 Kings 18:44; Heb. 12:1; Rev. 1:7.
flying like doves # 60:8 See Song. 1:15; 2:14. into their portals? # 60:8 Or “windows” or “dovecotes.”
9Indeed, the distant islands eagerly look for me,
with their large ships # 60:9 Or “the ships of Tarshish.” leading the way.
They are bringing Zion’s children from afar.
They come with offerings of silver and gold
to honor the name of Yahweh, your God, the Holy One of Israel,
for he has glorified you!” # 60:9 See John 17:22; Rom. 8:30.
Zion’s Restoration
10“Foreigners # 60:10 Or “sons of foreigners.” will rebuild your walls
and their kings will serve you.
Even though I punished you in my anger,
I will restore you in my gracious favor
and show you my tender compassion.
11Your gateways will always remain wide open # 60:11 See John 10:9–10. Jesus Christ is always ready to receive any who come to him.
around the clock to let in the procession of kings
bringing their constant stream of the riches of the nations.
12The nation or kingdom
that refuses to serve you will perish and be utterly ruined. # 60:12 See Ps. 2:12.
13Lebanon’s glory will be yours.
The cypress, fir, and pine will come to you
to beautify the site of my holy place.
And I will glorify the place where I rest my feet. # 60:13 Or “I will make my footstool glorious.”
14The descendants of your oppressors
will come bowing low before you,
and all who hated you will bow down at your feet.
They will call you The Beautiful City of Yahweh,
Glorious Zion of the Holy One of Israel.”
Zion’s Honor
15“Although once you were rejected and despised,
undesirable for anyone to pass through you,
I will make you majestic forever, # 60:15 Or “an eternal excellency.”
a source of joy for every generation. # 60:15 Read this verse again with the understanding of its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.
16You will guzzle the milk of nations # 60:16 This is a figure of speech for receiving the best from the nations and being enriched by kings.
and suckle at the breast of kings.
You will know me intimately
that I am Yahweh, your Savior,
for I am the Mighty Hero who rules over Jacob’s tribes,
your Kinsman-Redeemer!”
Everything Made Better
17“I will replace your copper with gold,
your iron with silver, # 60:17 These items are seen elsewhere in Scripture as symbols. Copper (brass) is a frequent symbol of judgment and gold a common symbol of the divine nature. God replaces our guilt with godliness. Unyielding iron can be seen as a symbol of stubbornness and silver is a common symbol of redemption.
your wood with copper,
and your stone with iron.
I will install peace and prosperity as your government
and righteousness as your overseer.
18Threats of violence will no longer be heard in your land,
nor will destruction and ruin be found within your borders.
You will name your walls Salvation
and your gates Praise.”
Zion’s Glory
19“The sun will no longer be needed to brighten the day,
nor the moon to shine at night,
for Yahweh will be your unfailing light;
your God will be your glory! # 60:19 See 1 John 1:5; Rev. 21:23.
20There will be no more sunsets or new moons, # 60:20 Or “the moon withdrawing itself.”
for Yahweh will be your everlasting light
and your days of sadness will be over. # 60:20 The dark night of our sin and pain and grief were ended by the work of Jesus on the cross and the work of the Holy Spirit within us. See John 14–16; 19:30; Rom. 8:14–25.
21All your people will be righteous
and will permanently possess the land.
I planted them there as a tender sapling,
the work of my own hands to display my glory.
22I will multiply the least of you into a thousand # 60:22 Or “a tribe.”
and the weakest one into a mighty nation. # 60:22 See Zech. 12:8.
I am Yahweh, and when the right time comes, # 60:22 See Eccl. 3:1–8; Acts 2:1–4; Gal. 4:4.
I will accomplish it swiftly!”

Zion’s Future Splendor
1 “Arise! Shine! For your light arrives!
The splendor#tn Or “glory” (so most English versions). of the Lord shines on you!
2 For, look, darkness covers the earth
and deep darkness covers#tn The verb “covers” is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line). the nations,
but the Lord shines on you;

3 Nations come to your light,
kings to your bright light.

7 All the sheep of Kedar will be gathered to you;
the rams of Nebaioth will be available to you as sacrifices.#tn Heb “will serve you,” i.e., be available as sacrifices (see the next line). Another option is to understood these “rams” as symbolic of leaders who will be subject to the people of Zion. See v. 10.
They will go up on my altar acceptably,#tc Heb “they will go up on acceptance [on] my altar.” Some have suggested that the preposition עַל (’al) is dittographic (note the preceding יַעֲלוּ [ya’alu]). Consequently, the form should be emended to לְרָצוֹן (lÿratson, “acceptably”; see BDB 953 s.v. רָצוֹן). However, the Qumran scroll 1QIsaa has both לרצון followed by the preposition על, which would argue against deleted the preposition. As the above translation seeks to demonstrate, the preposition עַל (’al) indicates a norm (“in accordance with acceptance” or “acceptably”; IBHS 218 §11.2.13e, n. 111) and the “altar” functions as an objective accusative with a verb of motion (cf. Gen 49:4; Lev 2:2; Num 13:17; J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah [NICOT], 2:534, n. 14).
and I will bestow honor on my majestic temple.
8 Who are these who float along#tn Heb “fly” (so KJV, NASB, NRSV); NAB, NIV “fly along.” like a cloud,
who fly like doves to their shelters?#tn Heb “to their windows,” i.e., to the openings in their coops. See HALOT 83 s.v. אֲרֻבָּה.
9 Indeed, the coastlands#tn Or “islands” (NIV); CEV “distant islands”; TEV “distant lands.” look eagerly for me,
the large ships#tn Heb “the ships of Tarshish.” See the note at 2:16. are in the lead,
bringing your sons from far away,
along with their silver and gold,
to honor the Lord your God,#tn Heb “to the name of the Lord your God.”

10 Foreigners will rebuild your walls;
their kings will serve you.
Even though I struck you down in my anger,
I will restore my favor and have compassion on you.#tn Heb “in my favor I will have compassion on you.”
11 Your gates will remain open at all times;
they will not be shut during the day or at night,
so that the wealth of nations may be delivered,
with their kings leading the way.#tn Or “led in procession.” The participle is passive.
12 Indeed,#tn Or “For” (KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT); TEV “But.” nations or kingdoms that do not serve you will perish;
such nations will be totally destroyed.#tn The infinitive absolute appears before the finite verb for emphasis.
13 The splendor of Lebanon will come to you,
its evergreens, firs, and cypresses together,
to beautify my palace;#tn Or “holy place, sanctuary.”
I will bestow honor on my throne room.#tn Heb “the place of my feet.” See Ezek 43:7, where the Lord’s throne is called the “place of the soles of my feet.”
14 The children of your oppressors will come bowing to you;
all who treated you with disrespect will bow down at your feet.
They will call you, ‘The City of the Lord,
Zion of the Holy One of Israel.’#sn See the note on the phrase “the Holy One of Israel” in 1:4.
15 You were once abandoned
and despised, with no one passing through,
but I will make you#tn Heb “Instead of your being abandoned and despised, with no one passing through, I will make you.” a permanent source of pride
and joy to coming generations.
16 You will drink the milk of nations;
you will nurse at the breasts of kings.#sn The nations and kings are depicted as a mother nursing her children. Restored Zion will be nourished by them as she receives their wealth as tribute.
Then you will recognize that I, the Lord, am your deliverer,
your protector,#tn Or “redeemer.” See the note at 41:14. the powerful ruler of Jacob.#sn See 1:24 and 49:26.
17 Instead of bronze, I will bring you gold,
instead of iron, I will bring you silver,

You will name your walls, ‘Deliverance,’
and your gates, ‘Praise.’
19 The sun will no longer supply light for you by day,
nor will the moon’s brightness shine on you;
the Lord will be your permanent source of light –
the splendor of your God will shine upon you.#tn Heb “and your God for your splendor.”
20 Your sun will no longer set;
your moon will not disappear;#sn In this verse “sun” and “moon” refer to the Lord’s light, which will replace the sun and moon (see v. 19). Light here symbolizes the restoration of divine blessing and prosperity in conjunction with the Lord’s presence. See 30:26.
the Lord will be your permanent source of light;
your time#tn Heb “days” (so KJV, NAB, NIV, NRSV, NLT). of sorrow will be over.
21 All of your people will be godly;#tn Or “righteous” (NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT); NAB “just.”
they will possess the land permanently.
I will plant them like a shoot;
they will be the product of my labor,
through whom I reveal my splendor.#tn Heb “a shoot of his planting, the work of my hands, to reveal splendor.”

the smallest of you will become a large nation.
