John the Baptist Beheaded
1At that time#Mk 6:14–29; Lk 9:7–9 Herod the tetrarch#Mk 8:15; Lk 3:19; 13:31; 23:7; Ac 4:27; 12:1; 13:1 heard the report about Jesus. 2“This is John the Baptist,” he told his servants. “He has been raised from the dead, and that’s why miraculous powers are at work in him.”#Mt 16:14; Mk 6:14; Lk 9:7
3For Herod had arrested John, chained#14:3 Or bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,#Mt 4:12; 11:2; Jn 3:24 4since John had been telling him, “It’s not lawful#Lv 18:16; 20:21 for you to have her.” 5Though Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd since they regarded John as a prophet.#Mt 11:9; 21:26,46
6When Herod’s birthday celebration came, Herodias’s daughter danced before them#14:6 Lit danced in the middle and pleased Herod. 7So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8Prompted by her mother, she answered, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.” 9Although the king regretted it, he commanded that it be granted because of his oaths and his guests. 10So he sent orders and had John beheaded in the prison. 11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12Then his disciples came, removed the corpse,#14:12 Other mss read body buried it, and went and reported to Jesus.
Feeding of the Five Thousand
13When Jesus heard about it,#Mk 6:32–44; Lk 9:10–17; Jn 6:1–13 he withdrew from there by boat to a remote place to be alone. When the crowds heard this, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14When he went ashore,#14:14 Lit Coming out (of the boat) he saw a large crowd, had compassion on them, and healed their sick.#Mt 4:23; 9:36
15When evening came, the disciples#Mt 10:1; 26:56; Mk 3:7; 16:20; Lk 6:13; Jn 12:16 approached him and said, “This place is deserted, and it is already late.#14:15 Lit and the time (for the evening meal) has already passed Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”
16 “They don’t need to go away,” Jesus told them. “You give them something to eat.”
17“But we only have five loaves and two fish here,” they said to him.
18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19Then he commanded the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.#1Sm 9:13; Mt 26:26; Mk 8:7; 14:22; Lk 24:30; Ac 27:35 20Everyone ate and was satisfied. They picked up twelve baskets full of leftover pieces.#Mt 16:9; Mk 6:43; 8:19; Lk 9:17; Jn 6:13 21Now those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Walking on the Water
22Immediately#Mk 6:45–51; Jn 6:15–21 he#14:22 Other mss read Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23After dismissing the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. Well into the night, he was there alone.#Lk 6:12; 9:48 24Meanwhile, the boat was already some distance#14:24 Lit already many stadia; one stadion = 600 feet from land,#14:24 Other mss read already in the middle of the sea battered by the waves, because the wind was against them. 25Jesus came toward them walking on the sea#Mt 24:23; Mk 13:35 very early in the morning.#14:25 Lit fourth watch of the night = 3 to 6 a.m. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and they cried out in fear.
27Immediately Jesus spoke to them. “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”#Dt 31:6; Is 41:13; 43:1–2; Mt 17:7; Lk 2:10; Rv 1:17
28“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter answered him, “command me to come to you on the water.”
29He said, “Come.”
And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus. 30But when he saw the strength of the wind,#14:30 Other mss read saw the wind he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” #Mt 6:30; 8:26; 16:8
32When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33Then those in the boat worshiped him and said, “Truly you are the Son of God.”#Ps 2:7; Mt 16:16; 26:63; Mk 1:1; Lk 4:41; Jn 11:4
Miraculous Healings
34When they had crossed over,#Mk 6:53–56; Jn 6:24–25 they came to shore at Gennesaret.#Mk 6:5; Lk 5:1 35When the men of that place recognized him, they alerted the whole vicinity and brought to him all who were sick. 36They begged him that they might only touch the end of his robe, and as many as touched it were healed.#Mt 9:20; Mk 3:10; Lk 6:19; Ac 5:15

The death of John the Baptist
(Mark 6.14-29; Luke 9.7-9)
1About this time Herod the ruler#14.1 Herod the ruler: Herod Antipas, the son of Herod the Great (see 2.1). heard the news about Jesus 2and told his officials, “This is John the Baptist! He has come back from death, and that's why he has the power to perform these miracles.”
3-4Herod had earlier arrested John and had him chained and put in prison. He did this because John had told him, “It isn't right for you to take Herodias, the wife of your brother Philip.”#Lk 3.19,20.#Lv 18.16; 20.21. 5Herod wanted to kill John. But the people thought John was a prophet, and Herod was afraid of what they might do.
6When Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests. She pleased Herod 7so much that he swore to give her whatever she wanted. 8But the girl's mother told her to say, “Here on a dish I want the head of John the Baptist!”
9The king was sorry for what he had said. But he did not want to break the promise he had made in front of his guests. So he ordered a guard 10to go to the prison and cut off John's head. 11It was taken on a dish to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 12John's followers took his body and buried it. Then they told Jesus what had happened.
Jesus feeds five thousand
(Mark 6.30-44; Luke 9.10-17; John 6.1-14)
13After Jesus heard about John, he crossed Lake Galilee#14.13 crossed Lake Galilee: To the east side. to go to some place where he could be alone. But the crowds found out and followed him on foot from the towns. 14When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw the large crowd. He felt sorry for them and healed everyone who was sick.
15That evening the disciples came to Jesus and said, “This place is like a desert, and it is already late. Let the crowds leave, so they can go to the villages and buy some food.”
16Jesus replied, “They don't have to leave. Why don't you give them something to eat?”
17But they said, “We have only five small loaves of bread#14.17 small loaves of bread: These would have been flat and round or in the shape of a bun. and two fish.” 18Jesus asked his disciples to bring the food to him, 19and he told the crowd to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish. He looked up towards heaven and blessed the food. Then he broke the bread and handed it to his disciples, and they gave it to the people.
20After everyone had eaten all they wanted, Jesus' disciples picked up twelve large baskets of leftovers.
21There were about five thousand men who ate, not counting the women and children.
Jesus walks on the water
(Mark 6.45-52; John 6.15-21)
22Straight away, Jesus made his disciples get into a boat and start back across the lake.#14.22 back across the lake: To the west side. But he stayed until he had sent the crowds away. 23Then he went up on a mountain where he could be alone and pray. Later that evening, he was still there.
24By this time the boat was a long way from the shore. It was going against the wind and was being tossed around by the waves. 25A little while before morning, Jesus came walking on the water towards his disciples. 26When they saw him, they thought he was a ghost. They were terrified and started screaming.
27At once, Jesus said to them, “Don't worry! I am Jesus. Don't be afraid.”
28Peter replied, “Lord, if it is really you, tell me to come to you on the water.”
29“Come on!” Jesus said. Peter then got out of the boat and started walking on the water towards him.
30But when Peter saw how strong the wind was, he was afraid and started sinking. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.
31Straight away, Jesus reached out his hand. He helped Peter up and said, “You don't have much faith. Why do you doubt?”
32When Jesus and Peter got into the boat, the wind died down. 33The men in the boat worshipped Jesus and said, “You really are the Son of God!”
Jesus heals sick people in Gennesaret
(Mark 6.53-56)
34Jesus and his disciples crossed the lake and came to shore near the town of Gennesaret. 35The people found out that he was there, and they sent word to everyone who lived in that part of the country. So they brought all the sick people to Jesus. 36They begged him just to let them touch his clothes, and everyone who did was healed.
