John the Baptist Beheaded
1At that time#Mk 6:14–29; Lk 9:7–9 Herod the tetrarch#Mk 8:15; Lk 3:19; 13:31; 23:7; Ac 4:27; 12:1; 13:1 heard the report about Jesus. 2“This is John the Baptist,” he told his servants. “He has been raised from the dead, and that’s why miraculous powers are at work in him.”#Mt 16:14; Mk 6:14; Lk 9:7
3For Herod had arrested John, chained#14:3 Or bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,#Mt 4:12; 11:2; Jn 3:24 4since John had been telling him, “It’s not lawful#Lv 18:16; 20:21 for you to have her.” 5Though Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd since they regarded John as a prophet.#Mt 11:9; 21:26,46
6When Herod’s birthday celebration came, Herodias’s daughter danced before them#14:6 Lit danced in the middle and pleased Herod. 7So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8Prompted by her mother, she answered, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.” 9Although the king regretted it, he commanded that it be granted because of his oaths and his guests. 10So he sent orders and had John beheaded in the prison. 11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12Then his disciples came, removed the corpse,#14:12 Other mss read body buried it, and went and reported to Jesus.
Feeding of the Five Thousand
13When Jesus heard about it,#Mk 6:32–44; Lk 9:10–17; Jn 6:1–13 he withdrew from there by boat to a remote place to be alone. When the crowds heard this, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14When he went ashore,#14:14 Lit Coming out (of the boat) he saw a large crowd, had compassion on them, and healed their sick.#Mt 4:23; 9:36
15When evening came, the disciples#Mt 10:1; 26:56; Mk 3:7; 16:20; Lk 6:13; Jn 12:16 approached him and said, “This place is deserted, and it is already late.#14:15 Lit and the time (for the evening meal) has already passed Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”
16 “They don’t need to go away,” Jesus told them. “You give them something to eat.”
17“But we only have five loaves and two fish here,” they said to him.
18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19Then he commanded the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.#1Sm 9:13; Mt 26:26; Mk 8:7; 14:22; Lk 24:30; Ac 27:35 20Everyone ate and was satisfied. They picked up twelve baskets full of leftover pieces.#Mt 16:9; Mk 6:43; 8:19; Lk 9:17; Jn 6:13 21Now those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Walking on the Water
22Immediately#Mk 6:45–51; Jn 6:15–21 he#14:22 Other mss read Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23After dismissing the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. Well into the night, he was there alone.#Lk 6:12; 9:48 24Meanwhile, the boat was already some distance#14:24 Lit already many stadia; one stadion = 600 feet from land,#14:24 Other mss read already in the middle of the sea battered by the waves, because the wind was against them. 25Jesus came toward them walking on the sea#Mt 24:23; Mk 13:35 very early in the morning.#14:25 Lit fourth watch of the night = 3 to 6 a.m. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and they cried out in fear.
27Immediately Jesus spoke to them. “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”#Dt 31:6; Is 41:13; 43:1–2; Mt 17:7; Lk 2:10; Rv 1:17
28“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter answered him, “command me to come to you on the water.”
29He said, “Come.”
And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus. 30But when he saw the strength of the wind,#14:30 Other mss read saw the wind he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” #Mt 6:30; 8:26; 16:8
32When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33Then those in the boat worshiped him and said, “Truly you are the Son of God.”#Ps 2:7; Mt 16:16; 26:63; Mk 1:1; Lk 4:41; Jn 11:4
Miraculous Healings
34When they had crossed over,#Mk 6:53–56; Jn 6:24–25 they came to shore at Gennesaret.#Mk 6:5; Lk 5:1 35When the men of that place recognized him, they alerted the whole vicinity and brought to him all who were sick. 36They begged him that they might only touch the end of his robe, and as many as touched it were healed.#Mt 9:20; Mk 3:10; Lk 6:19; Ac 5:15

John the Baptist Beheaded
1At that time Herod [Antipas], the tetrarch [who governed a portion of Palestine including Galilee and Perea], heard the reports about Jesus, 2and said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead, and that is why the miraculous powers are at work in him.”
3For Herod had John arrested and bound him and put him in prison [at the fortress of Machaerus, east of the Jordan, to keep him away] because of #Herodias was not the lawful wife of Herod Antipas. She was married to her uncle, Herod Philip I. She deserted him in order to live with another uncle, Herod Antipas, whose legal wife was the daughter of Aretas, King of Arabia.Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, 4for John had said to him, “It is not lawful (morally right) for you to have her [living with you as your wife].” 5Although Herod wished to have him put to death, he feared the people, for they regarded John as a prophet.
6But when Herod’s birthday came, [his niece Salome], the daughter of Herodias danced [immodestly] before them and pleased and fascinated Herod, 7so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8She, being coached by her mother [Herodias], said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9The king was distressed, but because of his oaths, and because of his dinner guests, he ordered it to be given her. 10He sent and had John beheaded in the prison. 11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother [Herodias]. 12And John’s disciples came and took away the body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
Five Thousand Fed
13When Jesus heard about John, He left there privately in a boat and went to a secluded place. But when the crowds heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt [profound] compassion for them and healed their sick.
15When evening came, the disciples came to Him and said, “This is an isolated place and the hour is already late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!” 17They replied, “We have nothing here except five loaves and two fish.” 18He said, “Bring them here to Me.” 19Then He ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and He took the five loaves and the two fish and, looking up toward heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people, 20and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up twelve full baskets of the leftover broken pieces. 21There were about 5,000 men who ate, besides women and children.
Jesus Walks on the Water
22Immediately He directed the disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side [of the Sea of Galilee], while He sent the crowds away. 23After He had dismissed the crowds, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When it was evening, He was there alone. 24But the boat [by this time] was already a #Lit many stadia; a stadion being about an eighth of a mile or 192 meters.long distance from land, tossed and battered by the waves; for the wind was against them. 25And in the fourth watch of the night (3:00-6:00 a.m.) Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. 26When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. 27But immediately He spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I! Do not be afraid!”
28Peter replied to Him, “Lord, if it is [really] You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29He said, “Come!” So Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30But when he saw [the effects of] the wind, he was frightened, and he began to sink, and he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31Immediately Jesus extended His hand and caught him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you #I.e. allow yourself to be drawn in two directions.doubt?” 32And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33Then those in the boat worshiped Him [with awe-inspired reverence], saying, “Truly You are the Son of God!”
34When they had crossed over [the sea], they went ashore at Gennesaret. 35And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent word throughout all the surrounding district and brought to Him all who were sick; 36and they begged Him to let them merely touch the fringe of His robe; and all who touched it were perfectly restored.
