Isaiah 53

1Who has believed what we have heard?#53:1 Or believed our report
And to whom has the arm of the Lord#Is 30:30; 40:10; 48:14; 51:9; 52:10; Lk 1:51; Ac 13:17 been revealed?#Jn 12:38; Rm 10:16
2He grew up before him like a young plant#Is 11:1
and like a root out of dry ground.
He didn’t have an impressive form
or majesty that we should look at him,
no appearance that we should desire him.#Is 52:14
3He was despised and rejected by men,#Ps 22:6; Is 49:7; Lk 18:31–33
a man of suffering who knew what sickness was.#Mk 8:31; Jn 1:10–11; Heb 4:15
He was like someone people turned away from;#53:3 Lit And like a hiding of faces from him
he was despised, and we didn’t value him.
4Yet he himself bore our sicknesses,
and he carried our pains;#Mt 8:17; 1Pt 2:21
but we in turn regarded him stricken,
struck down by God,#Ps 69:26 and afflicted.
5But he was pierced because of our rebellion,#Is 53:8; Rm 4:25; 1Co 15:3; Heb 9:28
crushed because of our iniquities;#Is 1:4
punishment#Jr 2:30; Zph 3:2; Heb 5:8 for our peace was on him,
and we are healed by his wounds.#1Pt 2:24–25
6We all went astray like sheep;#Mt 18:12
we all have turned to our own way;
and the Lord has punished him
for#53:6 Or has placed on him; lit with the iniquity#Is 13:11 of us all.#2Co 5:21; Col 2:14
7He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth.

he did not open his mouth.#Jr 11:19; Mt 26:63; 27:12–14; Lk 23:9; Jn 19:9; Ac 8:32–33; 1Pt 2:23
8He was taken away because of oppression and judgment,
and who considered his fate?#53:8 Or and as for his generation, who considered him?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
he was struck because of my people’s rebellion.
9He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
but he was with a rich man at his death,#Mt 27:57–60
because he had done no violence
and had not spoken deceitfully.#Heb 4:15; 1Pt 2:22; 1Jn 3:5
10Yet the Lord was pleased#Is 44:28; 55:11 to crush him severely.#53:10 Or him; he made him sick.#Dt 29:22; Is 17:11
When#53:10 Or If you make him a guilt offering,#Lv 5:1–19
he will see his seed, he will prolong his days,
and by his hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished.#Is 46:10
11After his anguish,
he will see light#53:11 DSS, LXX; MT omits light and be satisfied.
By his knowledge,
my righteous#1Jn 2:1 servant#Is 42:1 will justify many,#Ac 13:39; Rm 5:18–19
and he will carry their iniquities.
12Therefore I will give him#53:12 Or him with the many as a portion,
and he will receive#53:12 Or receive with the mighty as spoil,
because he willingly submitted to death,#Mt 26:42; Jn 10:14–18; Php 2:6–8
and was counted among the rebels;#Lk 22:37
yet he bore the sin of many#Heb 9:28
and interceded for the rebels.#Lk 23:34; Rm 8:34; Heb 7:25

Isaiah 53
53
The Suffering Servant
(Acts 8:26–40; 1 Peter 2:21–25)
1Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?#53:1 Cited in John 12:38 and Romans 10:16
2He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no stately form or majesty to attract us,
no beauty that we should desire Him.
3He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.
Like one from whom men hide their faces,
He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.
4Surely He took on our infirmities
and carried our sorrows;#53:4 LXX This One bears our sins and is pained for us; cited in Matthew 8:17 and 1 Peter 2:24
yet we considered Him stricken by God,
struck down and afflicted.
5But He was pierced for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him,
and by His stripes we are healed.#53:5 Cited in 1 Peter 2:24
6We all like sheep have gone astray,#53:6 Cited in 1 Peter 2:25
each one has turned to his own way;
and the Lord has laid upon Him
the iniquity of us all.
7He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet He did not open His mouth.
He was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,
so He did not open His mouth.
8By oppression and judgment He was taken away,
and who can recount His descendants?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;#53:8 LXX In humiliation He was deprived of justice. Who can recount His descendants? For His life was removed from the earth; cited in Acts 8:32–33.
He was stricken for the transgression of My people.
A Grave Assigned
(Matthew 27:57–61; Mark 15:42–47; Luke 23:50–56; John 19:38–42)
9He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with a rich man in His death,
although He had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in His mouth.#53:9 Cited in 1 Peter 2:22
10Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush Him
and to cause Him to suffer;
and when His soul is made a guilt offering,#53:10 Or and though He makes His life a guilt offering
He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days,
and the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.
11After the anguish of His soul,
He will see the light of life #53:11 DSS (see also LXX); MT does not include the light of life. and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant will justify many,
and He will bear their iniquities.
12Therefore I will allot Him a portion with the great,#53:12 Or many
and He will divide the spoils with the strong,#53:12 Or numerous
because He has poured out His life unto death,
and He was numbered with the transgressors.#53:12 Cited in Luke 22:37
Yet He bore the sin of many
and made intercession for the transgressors.
