A Pronouncement against Moab
1A pronouncement concerning Moab:#Gn 19:31–37; Is 11:14; 25:10; Jr 48:1–38; Ezk 25:8–11; Am 2:1–3; Zph 2:8–9
Ar in Moab is devastated,#Nm 21:28
destroyed in a night.
Kir in Moab is devastated,
destroyed in a night.
2Dibon went up to its temple
to weep at its high places.
Moab wails on Nebo and at#15:2 Or wails over Nebo and over Medeba.
Every head is shaved;
every beard is chopped short.
3In its streets they wear sackcloth;
on its rooftops and in its public squares everyone wails,
falling down and weeping.
4Heshbon and Elealeh cry out;
their voices are heard as far away as Jahaz.#Nm 21:28; 32:3; Jr 48:34
Therefore the soldiers of Moab cry out,
and they tremble.
5My heart cries out over Moab,
whose fugitives flee as far as Zoar,#Gn 19:21–22
to Eglath-shelishiyah;
they go up the Ascent of Luhith weeping;
they raise a cry of destruction
on the road to Horonaim.
6The Waters of Nimrim#Nm 32:3,36; Jos 13:27 are desolate;
the grass is withered, the foliage is gone,
and the vegetation has vanished.
7So they carry their wealth and belongings
over the Wadi of the Willows.#Is 30:6; Jr 48:36
8For their cry echoes
throughout the territory of Moab.
Their wailing reaches Eglaim;
their wailing reaches Beer-elim.
9The Waters of Dibon#15:9 DSS, some LXX mss, Vg; MT reads Dimon, twice in this v. are full of blood,#2Kg 3:22–23
but I will bring on Dibon even more than this —
a lion for those who escape from Moab,
and for the survivors in the land.#2Sm 23:20; 1Ch 11:22

Oracle of Judgment on Moab
1An oracle of Moab:
Because Ar is devastated in a night, Moab is destroyed;
because Kir of Moab is devastated in a night, it is destroyed.
2It has gone up to the house,#Or “temple”
and Dibon to the high places
for weeping over Nebo,
and Moab wails over Medeba.
Every head is bald,#Literally “On all its heads baldness”
every beard is shaved.
3They gird themselves with sackcloth in its streets;
on its roofs and public squares everyone wails,
going down in weeping.
4And Heshbon and Elealeh cry#The Hebrew is singular out,
their voice is heard as far as Jahaz;
therefore the armed ones of Moab cry out;
its soul quivers#The Hebrew words for “cry out” and “quiver” are similar for him.
5My heart cries out for Moab;
its fugitives flee up to Zoar,
to Eglath-shelishiyah.
For at the ascent of Luhith it goes up it with weeping;
for on the road of Horonaim they raise up a cry of destruction.
6For the waters of Nimrim are wastelands;
for the grass has withered,
the vegetation has vanished,
there is no greenness.
7Therefore they carry the abundance it has made
and their store of goods over the river of the poplars.
8For a cry for help has encircled the territory of Moab,
her wailing is heard as far as Eglaim,
and her wailing as far as Beer Elim.
9For the waters of Dimon#One of the Dead Sea Scrolls reads “Dibon” here are full of blood;
but I will place added things upon Dimon:
a lion for the survivors#Hebrew “survivor” of Moab
and for the remnant of the land.
