PSALM 97
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1God reigneth, let the earth be glad,
and isles rejoice each one.
2Dark clouds him compass; and in right
with judgment dwells his throne.
3Fire goes before him,
and his foes it burns up round about:
4His lightnings lighten did the world; earth saw,
and shook throughout.
5Hills at the presence of the Lord,
like wax, did melt away;
Ev'n at the presence of the Lord
of all the earth, I say.
6The heav'ns declare his righteousness,
all men his glory see.
7All who serve graven images,
confounded let them be.
Who do of idols boast themselves,
let shame upon them fall:
Ye that are called gods, see that
ye do him worship all.
8Sion did hear, and joyful was,
glad Judah's daughters were;
They much rejoic'd, O Lord, because
thy judgments did appear.
9For thou, O Lord, art high above
all things on earth that are;
Above all other gods thou art
exalted very far.
10Hate ill, all ye that love the Lord:
his saints' souls keepeth he;
And from the hands of wicked men
he sets them safe and free.
11For all those that be righteous
sown is a joyful light,
And gladness sown is for all those
that are in heart upright.
12Ye righteous, in the Lord rejoice;
express your thankfulness,
When ye into your memory
do call his holiness.

Psalm 97
The Lord rules as king! #97:1 This is another Royal Psalm. It tells us what happens when everybody sees that God is king. He punishes those people who do bad things. He rescues his people when they are in trouble.
1The Lord rules as king!
Everyone on earth should be happy!
The people who live on the shore of the seas
should sing with joy!
2Dark clouds are all round the Lord.
He rules with justice,
and he is fair to everyone.
3Fire goes in front of him.
It burns up his enemies on every side.
4His lightning lights up the whole world.
The earth sees it and it shakes with fear.
5The mountains melt like butter
in front of the Lord,
when they see the Lord of the whole earth.
6The sky itself tells us that he is righteous
People from every nation see his glory.
7Everyone who worships idols should be ashamed.
They should not boast about useless idols!
All gods like that will fall down in front of the Lord.
8When Zion's people hear about it,
they will be happy.
Yes, the people of Judah will be very happy!
They will be happy, Lord,
because you bring justice.
9You, Lord, are the Most High God
who rules over all the earth.
You are much greater than any other god! #97:9 Nations all round Judah had their own gods. Often they used wood, metal or stone to make idols which they worshipped. When God appears, everyone will know that he is the only true God. The Lord God is the Most High God, the God who lives for ever.
10If you love the Lord,
then hate anything that is evil.
The Lord protects the lives of those who serve him.
He keeps them safe from the power of wicked people.
11God's light shines on righteous people.
Good, honest people will be very happy.
12All you righteous people,
be happy because of what the Lord has done.
Thank him because he is holy.
