Psalms 92

PSALM 92
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
A Psalm or Song for the sabbath day.
1To render thanks unto the Lord
it is a comely thing,
And to thy name, O thou most High,
due praise aloud to sing.
2Thy loving-kindness to shew forth
when shines the morning light;
And to declare thy faithfulness
with pleasure ev'ry night.
3On a ten-stringed instrument,
upon the psaltery,
And on the harp with solemn sound,
and grave sweet melody.
4For thou, Lord, by thy mighty works
hast made my heart right glad;
And I will triumph in the works
which by thine hands were made.
5How great, Lord, are thy works! each thought
of thine a deep it is:
6A brutish man it knoweth not;
fools understand not this.
7When those that lewd and wicked are
spring quickly up like grass,
And workers of iniquity
do flourish all apace;
It is that they for ever may
destroyed be and slain;
8But thou, O Lord, art the most High,
for ever to remain.
9For, lo, thine enemies, O Lord,
thine en'mies perish shall;
The workers of iniquity
shall be dispersed all.
10But thou shalt, like unto the horn
of th' unicorn, exalt
My horn on high: thou with fresh oil
anoint me also shalt.
11Mine eyes shall also my desire
see on mine enemies;
Mine ears shall of the wicked hear
that do against me rise.
12But like the palm-tree flourishing
shall be the righteous one;
He shall like to the cedar grow
that is in Lebanon.
13Those that within the house of God
are planted by his grace,
They shall grow up, and flourish all
in our God's holy place.
14And in old age, when others fade,
they fruit still forth shall bring;
They shall be fat, and full of sap,
and aye be flourishing;
15To shew that upright is the Lord:
he is a rock to me;
And he from all unrighteousness
is altogether free.

Psalm 92
This psalm is a song to sing on Sabbath days.
A song to praise God
1It is good to thank the Lord!
We sing to praise your name, Most High God.
2We sing in the morning
to thank you for your faithful love.
We sing at night
to say that you are always faithful.
3We make beautiful music
with lutes, harps and lyres. #92:3 Lutes, harps and lyres made music when people played on their strings.
4The things that you do, Lord,
make me very happy.
I sing with joy
because of the things that your hands have made!
5Yes, Lord, you have done great things!
Your thoughts are more than we can understand!
6Here is something that stupid people do not know.
Fools do not understand it.
7 Wicked people may continue to grow,
like green grass.
Evil people may grow like weeds.
But in the end you will destroy them
and they will never grow again. #92:7 Grass and weeds grow everywhere! So do bad people. But God will destroy them one day, as they deserve. That will be the end of them. Stupid people may be jealous of wicked people, because they do not understand that God will punish them one day.
8You, Lord, will rule as King for ever!
9Yes, Lord, look at your enemies!
Your enemies will all die!
Those people who do evil things will all disappear!
10You have made me as strong as a wild bull.
You have poured pure olive oil on me. #92:10 The writer may have been a king. The Israelites poured olive oil on a new king to show that God had chosen him as king.
11With my own eyes,
I have seen my enemies fall.
With my own ears,
I have heard them cry out in pain.
12 Righteous people will do well,
like a palm tree that makes new leaves.
They will become strong,
like a tall cedar tree in Lebanon.
13They are like trees that someone has planted in the Lord's house.
They grow well in the yard of our God's temple.
14When they are old,
they will still give fruit!
They will always be strong,
with fresh, green leaves.
15They will tell everyone,
‘The Lord always does what is right.
He is my strong, safe rock.
There is nothing bad in him.’
