PSALM 91
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1He that doth in the secret place
of the most High reside,
Under the shade of him that is
th' Almighty shall abide.
2I of the Lord my God will say,
He is my refuge still,
He is my fortress, and my God,
and in him trust I will.
3Assuredly he shall thee save,
and give deliverance
From subtile fowler's snare,
and from the noisome pestilence.
4His feathers shall thee hide; thy trust
under his wings shall be:
His faithfulness shall be a shield
and buckler unto thee.
5Thou shalt not need to be afraid
for terrors of the night;
Nor for the arrow that doth fly
by day, while it is light;
6Nor for the pestilence, that walks
in darkness secretly;
Nor for destruction, that doth waste
at noon-day openly.
7A thousand at thy side shall fall,
on thy right hand shall lie
Ten thousand dead; yet unto thee
it shall not once come nigh.
8Only thou with thine eyes shalt look,
and a beholder be;
And thou therein the just reward
of wicked men shalt see.
9Because the Lord, who constantly
my refuge is alone,
Ev'n the most High, is made by thee
thy habitation;
10No plague shall near thy dwelling come;
no ill shall thee befall:
11For thee to keep in all thy ways
his angels charge he shall.
12They in their hands shall bear thee up,
still waiting thee upon;
Lest thou at any time should'st dash
thy foot against a stone.
13Upon the adder thou shalt tread,
and on the lion strong;
Thy feet on dragons trample shall,
and on the lions young.
14Because on me he set his love,
I'll save and set him free;
Because my great name he hath known,
I will him set on high.
15He'll call on me, I'll answer him;
I will be with him still
In trouble, to deliver him,
and honour him I will.
16With length of days unto his mind
I will him satisfy;
I also my salvation
will cause his eyes to see.

God’s Protection in Times of Crisis
1One who lives in the secret place#Or “shelter” of the Most High
will lodge in the shadow of Shaddai.#Often translated “the Almighty,” this is perhaps better understood as “God of the Mountain”
2I will say to Yahweh, “You are my refuge and my fortress,
my God in whom I trust.”
3For he will deliver#Hebrew “he, he will deliver” is perhaps emphatic, “He will certainly deliver” you from the snare of the fowler,
from the plague of destruction.
4With his feathers he will cover you,
and under his wings you can take refuge.
His faithfulness will be a shield and a buckler.#That is, a small, round shield, or perhaps a surrounding bulwark
5You need not fear the terror of the night,
or the arrow that flies by day,
6or the plague that spreads in the darkness,
or the destruction that devastates at noon.
7A thousand may fall at your side,
and ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8You will only look with your eyes,
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9For you, O Yahweh, are my refuge.
You have made the Most High your dwelling place.#This is the most straightforward translation of the Hebrew, though the “you” of each line would refer to a different person. A more unusual rendering would be “Because Yahweh, my refuge, even the Most High, you have made your dwelling place …”
10No harm will befall you,
and no plague will come near your tent.
11For he will command his angels concerning you,
to watch over you in all your ways.
12In their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
13You will tread on lion and viper;
you will trample young lion and serpent.
14Because he loves me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will protect#The sense is that of making something inaccessibly high, like a fortress him because he knows my name.
15He will call upon me and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue and honor him.
16With long life#Literally “a length of days” I will satisfy him,
and show him my salvation.
