PSALM 90
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
A Prayer of Moses the man of God.
1Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place
in generations all.
2Before thou ever hadst brought forth
the mountains great or small;
Ere ever thou hadst form'd the earth,
and all the world abroad;
Ev'n thou from everlasting art
to everlasting God.
3Thou dost unto destruction
man that is mortal turn;
And unto them thou say'st, Again,
ye sons of men, return.
4Because a thousand years appear
no more before thy sight
Than yesterday, when it is past,
or than a watch by night.
5As with an overflowing flood
thou carry'st them away:
They like a sleep are, like the grass
that grows at morn are they.
6At morn it flourishes and grows,
cut down at ev'n doth fade.
7For by thine anger we're consum'd,
thy wrath makes us afraid.
8Our sins thou and iniquities
dost in thy presence place,
And sett'st our secret faults before
the brightness of thy face.
9For in thine anger all our days
do pass on to an end;
And as a tale that hath been told,
so we our years do spend.
10Threescore and ten years do sum up
our days and years, we see;
Or, if, by reason of more strength,
in some fourscore they be:
Yet doth the strength of such old men
but grief and labour prove;
For it is soon cut off,
and we fly hence, and soon remove.
11Who knows the power of thy wrath?
according to thy fear
12So is thy wrath: Lord, teach thou us
our end in mind to bear;
And so to count our days, that we
our hearts may still apply
To learn thy wisdom and thy truth,
that we may live thereby.
13Turn yet again to us, O Lord,
how long thus shall it be?
Let it repent thee now for those
that servants are to thee.
14O with thy tender mercies, Lord,
us early satisfy;
So we rejoice shall all our days,
and still be glad in thee.
15According as the days have been,
wherein we grief have had,
And years wherein we ill have seen,
so do thou make us glad.
16O let thy work and pow'r appear
thy servants' face before;
And shew unto their children dear
thy glory evermore:
17And let the beauty of the Lord
our God be us upon:
Our handy-works establish thou,
establish them each one.

Book Four
From Everlasting to Everlasting
A #Ps. 17, title; 55:1 Prayer of Moses, the #Deut. 33:1; Josh. 14:6; Ezra 3:2man of God.
1Lord, you have been our #See Ps. 71:3dwelling place#90:1 Some Hebrew manuscripts (compare Septuagint) our refuge
in all generations.

3You return man to dust
and say, #Gen. 3:19 “Return, #Eccles. 12:7O children of man!”#90:3 Or of Adam
4For #2 Pet. 3:8 a thousand years in your sight
are but as #[Ps. 39:5] yesterday when it is past,
or as #Ex. 14:24; Judg. 7:19a watch in the night.
5You #Ps. 58:9 sweep them away as with a flood; they are like #See Job 20:8 a dream,

in the evening it #Job 14:2; [Ps. 92:7] fades and #James 1:11withers.
7For we are brought to an end by your anger;
by your wrath we are dismayed.
8You have #Jer. 16:17; Heb. 4:13 set our iniquities before you,
our #Ps. 19:12secret sins in the light of your presence.
9For all our days pass away under your wrath;
we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
10The years of our life are seventy,
or even by reason of strength eighty;
yet their span#90:10 Or pride is but toil and trouble;
they are soon gone, and we fly away.
11Who considers the power of your anger,
and your wrath according to the fear of you?

that we may get a heart of wisdom.

14Satisfy us in the #See Ps. 46:5 morning with your steadfast love,
that we may #See Ps. 85:6rejoice and be glad all our days.
15Make us glad for as many days as you have #[Deut. 8:2]afflicted us,
and for as many years as we have seen evil.
16Let your #Ps. 77:12; 92:4; 95:9; Deut. 32:4; Hab. 3:2work be shown to your servants,
and your glorious power to their children.
17Let the #Ps. 27:4 favor#90:17 Or beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
and establish #[Ps. 128:2]; [Isa. 26:12]the work of our hands upon us;
yes, establish the work of our hands!
