Psalms 9

PSALM 9
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
To the chief Musician upon Muth-labben,
A Psalm of David.
1Lord, thee I'll praise with all my heart,
thy wonders all proclaim.
2In thee, most High, I'll greatly joy,
and sing unto thy name.
3When back my foes were turn'd, they fell,
and perish'd at thy sight:
4For thou maintain'dst my right and cause;
on throne sat'st judging right.
5The heathen thou rebuked hast,
the wicked overthrown;
Thou hast put out their names, that they
may never more be known.
6O en'my! now destructions have
an end perpetual:
Thou cities raz'd; perish'd with them
is their memorial.
7God shall endure for aye; he doth
for judgment set his throne;
8In righteousness to judge the world,
justice to give each one.
9God also will a refuge be
for those that are oppress'd;
A refuge will he be in times
of trouble to distress'd.
10And they that know thy name, in thee
their confidence will place:
For thou hast not forsaken them
that truly seek thy face.
11O sing ye praises to the Lord,
that dwells in Sion hill;
And all the nations among
his deeds record ye still.
12When he enquireth after blood,
he then rememb'reth them:
The humble folk he not forgets
that call upon his name.
13Lord, pity me; behold the grief
which I from foes sustain;
Ev'n thou, who from the gates of death
dost raise me up again;
14That I, in Sion's daughters' gates,
may all thy praise advance;
And that I may rejoice always
in thy deliverance.
15The heathen are sunk in the pit
which they themselves prepar'd;
And in the net which they have hid
their own feet fast are snar'd.
16The Lord is by the judgment known
which he himself hath wrought:
The sinners' hands do make the snares
wherewith themselves are caught.
17They who are wicked into hell
each one shall turned be;
And all the nations that forget
to seek the Lord most high.
18For they that needy are shall not
forgotten be alway;
The expectation of the poor
shall not be lost for aye.
19Arise, Lord, let not man prevail;
judge heathen in thy sight:
20That they may know themselves but men,
the nations, Lord, affright.

Psalms 9
9
Psalm 9#9.0 Ps 9 is an alphabetic acrostic poem (cf Ps 119) in Heb, with successive letters of the alphabet beginning every few lines, with only a few exceptions. Only ten letters are found in Ps 9; the sequence may be continued in Ps 10, suggesting that Pss 9–10 are a single poem.
For the music leader. According to Muth-labben.#9.0 Or Almuth labben; Heb uncertain, perhaps a reference to the melody; cf Pss 46:1; 48:14 A psalm of David.
1I will thank you, LORD, with all my heart;
I will talk about all your wonderful acts.
2I will celebrate and rejoice in you;
I will sing praises to your name, Most High.
3When my enemies turn and retreat,
they fall down and die right in front of you
4because you have established justice
for me and my claim,
because you rule from the throne,
establishing justice rightly.
5You’ve denounced the nations,
destroyed the wicked.
You’ve erased their names for all time.
6Every enemy is wiped out,
like something ruined forever.
You’ve torn down their cities—
even the memory of them is dead.
7But the LORD rules forever!
He assumes his throne
for the sake of justice.
8He will establish justice in the world rightly;
he will judge all people fairly.
9The LORD is a safe place for the oppressed—
a safe place in difficult times.
10Those who know your name trust you
because you have not abandoned
any who seek you, LORD.
11Sing praises to the LORD, who lives in Zion!
Proclaim his mighty acts among all people!
12Because the one who avenges bloodshed
remembers those who suffer;
the LORD hasn’t forgotten their cries for help.
13Have mercy on me, LORD!
Just look how I suffer
because of those who hate me.
But you are the one who brings me back
from the very gates of death
14so I can declare all your praises,
so I can rejoice in your salvation
in the gates of Daughter Zion.
15The nations have fallen
into the hole they themselves made!
Their feet are caught
in the very net they themselves hid!
16The LORD is famous for the justice he has done;
it’s his own doing that the wicked are trapped. Higgayon.#9.16 Heb uncertain; or recitation (see Pss 1:2; 19:14) or melody (see Ps 92:3). Selah
17Let the wicked go straight to the grave,#9.17 Heb Sheol
the same for every nation that forgets God.
18Because the poor won’t be forgotten forever,
the hope of those who suffer won’t be lost for all time.
19Get up, LORD! Don’t let people prevail!
Let the nations be judged before you.
20Strike them with fear, LORD.
Let the nations know they are only human. Selah
