PSALM 88
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
A Song or Psalm for the sons of Korah, to the chief Musician upon Mahalath Leannoth, Maschil of Heman the Ezrahite.
1Lord God, my Saviour, day and night
before thee cry'd have I.
2Before thee let my prayer come;
give ear unto my cry.
3For troubles great do fill my soul;
my life draws nigh the grave.
4I'm counted with those that go down to pit,
and no strength have.
5Ev'n free among the dead, like them
that slain in grave do lie;
Cut off from thy hand, whom no more
thou hast in memory.
6Thou hast me laid in lowest pit,
in deeps and darksome caves.
7Thy wrath lies hard on me, thou hast
me press'd with all thy waves.
8Thou hast put far from me my friends,
thou mad'st them to abhor me;
And I am so shut up, that I
find no evasion for me.
9By reason of affliction
mine eye mourns dolefully:
To thee, Lord, do I call,
and stretch my hands continually.
10Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead?
shall they rise, and thee bless?
11Shall in the grave thy love be told?
in death thy faithfulness?
12Shall thy great wonders in the dark,
or shall thy righteousness
Be known to any in the land
of deep forgetfulness?
13But, Lord, to thee I cry'd; my pray'r
at morn prevent shall thee.
14Why, Lord, dost thou cast off my soul,
and hid'st thy face from me?
15Distress'd am I, and from my youth
I ready am to die;
Thy terrors I have borne, and am
distracted fearfully.
16The dreadful fierceness of thy wrath
quite over me doth go:
Thy terrors great have cut me off,
they did pursue me so.
17For round about me ev'ry day,
like water, they did roll;
And, gathering together, they
have compassed my soul.
18My friends thou hast put far from me,
and him that did me love;
And those that mine acquaintance were
to darkness didst remove.

Psalms 88
88
A song from the Korah family. To the director: About a painful sickness. A maskil of Heman the Ezrahite.
1Lord God, you are my Savior.
I have been praying to you day and night.
2Please pay attention to my prayers.
Listen to my prayers for mercy.
3My soul has had enough of this pain!
I am ready to die.
4People already treat me like a dead man,
like someone too weak to live.
5Look for me among the dead,
like a body in the grave.
I am one of those you have forgotten,
cut off from you and your care.
6You put me in that hole in the ground.
Yes, you put me in that dark place.
7Your anger presses down on me like a heavy weight.
It’s like one wave after another pounding against me. Selah
8You made my friends leave me.
They all avoid me like someone no one wants to touch.
Like a prisoner in my house, I cannot go out.
9My eyes hurt from crying.
Lord, I pray to you constantly!
I lift my arms in prayer to you.
10Do you do miracles for the dead?
Do ghosts rise up and praise you? No! Selah
11The dead in their graves cannot talk about your faithful love.
People in the world of the dead#88:11 the world of the dead Or “Abaddon,” a Hebrew name meaning “death” or “destruction.” See Rev. 9:11. cannot talk about your faithfulness.
12The dead who lie in darkness cannot see the amazing things you do.
Those in the world of the forgotten cannot talk about your goodness.
13Lord, I am asking you to help me!
Early each morning I pray to you.
14Lord, why have you abandoned me?
Why do you refuse to listen to me?
15I have been sick and weak since I was young.
I have suffered your anger, and I am helpless.
16Your anger covers me like a flood.
Your attacks are killing me.
17They surround me on every side.
I feel like a drowning man.
18You caused my friends and loved ones to leave me.
Now darkness is my closest friend.
