Psalms 83

PSALM 83
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
Song or Psalm of Asaph.
1Keep not, O God, we thee entreat,
O keep not silence now:
Do thou not hold thy peace, O God,
and still no more be thou.
2For, lo, thine enemies a noise
tumultuously have made;
And they that haters are of thee
have lifted up the head.
3Against thy chosen people they
do crafty counsel take;
And they against thy hidden ones
do consultations make.
4Come, let us cut them off, said they,
from being a nation,
That of the name of Isr'el may
no more be mention.
5For with joint heart they plot, in league
against thee they combine.
6The tents of Edom, Ishm'elites,
Moab's and Hagar's line;
7Gebal, and Ammon, Amalek,
Philistines, those of Tyre;
8And Assur join'd with them, to help
Lot's children they conspire.
9Do to them as to Midian,
Jabin at Kison strand;
10And Sis'ra, which at En-dor fell,
as dung to fat the land.
11Like Oreb and like Zeeb make
their noble men to fall;
Like Zeba and Zalmunna like,
make thou their princes all;
12Who said, For our possession
let us God's houses take.
13My God, them like a wheel, as chaff
before the wind, them make.
14As fire consumes the wood, as flame
doth mountains set on fire,
15Chase and affright them with the storm
and tempest of thine ire.
16Their faces fill with shame, O Lord,
that they may seek thy name.
17Let them confounded be, and vex'd,
and perish in their shame:
18That men may know that thou, to whom
alone doth appertain
The name JEHOVAH, dost most high
o'er all the earth remain.

Prayer against Enemies
A song. A psalm of Asaph. # 1Ch 16:5,7
1God, do not keep silent.
Do not be deaf, God; do not be idle. # Ps 28:1; 39:12; Is 62:1
2See how Your enemies make an uproar;
those who hate You have acted arrogantly. # Lit have lifted their head # Ps 2:1; Is 17:12
3They devise clever schemes against Your people;
they conspire against Your treasured ones. # Jb 5:12-13; Ps 37:12; 64:2
4They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation
so that Israel’s name will no longer be remembered.” # Ps 41:5; Jr 11:19
5For they have conspired with one mind;
they form an alliance # Lit they cut a covenant against You # Ps 2:2 —
6the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, # Gn 25:12-16; Ps 137:7
Moab and the Hagrites, # 1Ch 5:10; 2Ch 20:10
7Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, # Jos 13:5; 1Sm 15:2
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre. # 1Sm 4:1; Ezk 27:3
8Even Assyria has joined them;
they lend support # Lit they are an arm to the sons of Lot. # = Moab and Edom # 2Kg 15:19Selah
9Deal with them as You did with Midian, # Nm 31:7; Jdg 7:1-24
as You did with Sisera
and Jabin at the Kishon River. # Jdg 4:7; 5:21
10They were destroyed at En-dor;
they became manure for the ground. # Jr 9:22; 16:4; 25:33
11Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, # Jdg 7:25; 8:3
and all their tribal leaders like Zebah and Zalmunna, # Jdg 8:5-21
12who said, “Let us seize God’s pastures for ourselves.” # 2Ch 20:11
13Make them like tumbleweed, my God,
like straw before the wind. # Jb 21:18; Ps 1:4; Is 17:13
14As fire burns a forest,
as a flame blazes through mountains, # Is 9:18; 10:16-19
15so pursue them with Your tempest
and terrify them with Your storm. # Jb 9:17; Ps 58:9
16Cover their faces with shame
so that they will seek Your name Yahweh. # Ps 35:26; 109:29; 132:18
17Let them be put to shame and terrified forever;
let them perish in disgrace. # Ps 35:4; 70:2
18May they know that You alone —
whose name is Yahweh —
are the Most High over all the earth. # Ps 97:9
