PSALM 79
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
A Psalm of Asaph.
1O God, the heathen enter'd have
thine heritage; by them
Defiled is thy house: on heaps
they laid Jerusalem.
2The bodies of thy servants they
have cast forth to be meat
To rav'nous fowls; thy dear saints' flesh
they gave to beasts to eat.
3Their blood about Jerusalem
like water they have shed;
And there was none to bury them
when they were slain and dead.
4Unto our neighbours a reproach
most base become are we;
A scorn and laughingstock to them
that round about us be.
5How long, Lord, shall thine anger last?
wilt thou still keep the same?
And shall thy fervent jealousy
burn like unto a flame?
6On heathen pour thy fury forth,
that have thee never known,
And on those kingdoms which thy name
have never call'd upon.
7For these are they who Jacob have
devoured cruelly;
And they his habitation
have caused waste to lie.
8Against us mind not former sins;
thy tender mercies show;
Let them prevent us speedily,
for we're brought very low.
9For thy name's glory help us, Lord,
who hast our Saviour been:
Deliver us; for thy name's sake,
O purge away our sin.
10Why say the heathen, Where's their God?
let him to them be known;
When those who shed thy servants' blood
are in our sight o'erthrown.
11O let the pris'ner's sighs ascend
before thy sight on high;
Preserve those in thy mighty pow'r
that are design'd to die.
12And to our neighbours' bosom cause
it sev'n-fold render'd be,
Ev'n the reproach wherewith they have,
O Lord, reproached thee.
13So we thy folk, and pasture-sheep,
shall give thee thanks always;
And unto generations all
we will shew forth thy praise.

A Dirge and a Prayer for Israel, Destroyed by Enemies
A Psalm of Asaph.
1O God, the nations have come into #Ps. 74:2Your inheritance;
Your holy temple they have defiled;
#2 Kin. 25:9, 10; 2 Chr. 36:17–19; Jer. 26:18; 52:12–14; Mic. 3:12They have laid Jerusalem in heaps.
2#Deut. 28:26; Jer. 7:33; 19:7; 34:20The dead bodies of Your servants
They have given as food for the birds of the heavens,
The flesh of Your saints to the beasts of the earth.
3Their blood they have shed like water all around Jerusalem,
And there was no one to bury them.
4We have become a reproach to our #Ps. 44:13; (Dan. 9:16)neighbors,
A scorn and derision to those who are around us.
5#Ps. 74:1, 9How long, Lord?
Will You be angry forever?
Will Your #(Zeph. 3:8)jealousy burn like fire?
6#Jer. 10:25; (Zeph. 3:8)Pour out Your wrath on the nations that #Is. 45:4, 5; 1 Thess. 4:5; (2 Thess. 1:8)do not know You,
And on the kingdoms that #Ps. 53:4do not call on Your name.
7For they have devoured Jacob,
And laid waste his dwelling place.
8#Is. 64:9Oh, do not remember former iniquities against us!
Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us,
For we have been brought very low.
9Help us, O God of our salvation,
For the glory of Your name;
And deliver us, and provide atonement for our sins,
#Jer. 14:7, 21For Your name’s sake!
10#Ps. 42:10Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
Let there be known among the nations in our sight
The avenging of the blood of Your servants which has been shed.
11Let #Ps. 102:20the groaning of the prisoner come before You;
According to the greatness of Your power
Preserve those who are appointed to die;
12And return to our neighbors #Gen. 4:15; Lev. 26:21; Prov. 6:31; Is. 30:26sevenfold into their bosom
#Ps. 74:10, 18, 22Their reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord.
13So #Ps. 74:1; 95:7we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture,
Will give You thanks forever;
#Is. 43:21We will show forth Your praise to all generations.
