Psalms 76

PSALM 76
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
To the chief Musician on Neginoth,
A Psalm or Song of Asaph.
1In Judah's land God is well known,
his name's in Isr'el great:
2In Salem is his tabernacle,
in Sion is his seat.
3There arrows of the bow he brake,
the shield, the sword, the war.
4More glorious thou than hills of prey,
more excellent art far.
5Those that were stout of heart are spoil'd,
they slept their sleep outright;
And none of those their hands did find,
that were the men of might.
6When thy rebuke, O Jacob's God,
had forth against them past,
Their horses and their chariots both
were in a dead sleep cast.
7Thou, Lord, ev'n thou art he that should
be fear'd; and who is he
That may stand up before thy sight,
if once thou angry be?
8From heav'n thou judgment caus'd be heard;
the earth was still with fear,
9When God to judgment rose, to save
all meek on earth that were.
10Surely the very wrath of man
unto thy praise redounds:
Thou to the remnant of his wrath
wilt set restraining bounds.
11Vow to the Lord your God,
and pay: all ye that near him be,
Bring gifts and presents unto him;
for to be fear'd is he.
12By him the sp'rits shall be cut off
of those that princes are:
Unto the kings that are on earth
he fearful doth appear.

Psalm 76
This psalm is a song that Asaph wrote for the music leader. Sing it with the music of stringed instruments.
God has great power
1People in Judah know who God is.
He is famous in Israel. #76:1 Judah and Israel are both names for God's people.
2His home is in Salem.
Yes, he lives in Zion. #76:2 Salem and Zion are names for Jerusalem.
3There he destroyed all the weapons of our enemy,
their arrows, their shields,
and their swords.
He destroyed everything that they use to fight wars.
Selah.
4God, you are the one who shines with glory!
You are greater than the greatest mountains.
5You won against brave soldiers,
so that we robbed them of everything.
Now they are sleeping,
and they will never wake up!
They are completely helpless.
6God of Jacob,
when your enemies heard your battle cry,
both the horses and their riders fell down dead.
7Yes, everyone is afraid of you, our God!
When you are angry,
nobody can stand against you.
8From heaven you said how you would judge people.
Everybody on earth became afraid.
They could not say anything!
9This happened when you came to punish wicked people.
You came to rescue the weak and poor people in the land.
Selah.
10Everybody will praise you,
even those who are angry against you.
You will show them how angry you really are. #76:10 This verse is difficult to understand in Hebrew.
11Make promises to the Lord your God,
and do what you have promised.
Everyone who serves God should bring gifts to him.
We must respect him with fear.
12He makes proud rulers become humble.
All the kings of the world should be afraid of him.
