Psalms 75

PSALM 75
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
To the chief Musician, Al-taschith,
A Psalm or Song of Asaph.
1To thee, O God, do we give thanks,
we do give thanks to thee;
Because thy wondrous works declare
thy great name near to be.
2I purpose, when I shall receive
the congregation,
That I shall judgment uprightly
render to ev'ry one.
3Dissolved is the land, with all
that in the same do dwell;
But I the pillars thereof do
Bear up, and stablish well.
4I to the foolish people said,
Do not deal foolishly;
And unto those that wicked are,
Lift not your horn on high.
5Lift not your horn on high, nor speak
6with stubborn neck. But know,
That not from east, nor west, nor south,
promotion doth flow.
7But God is judge; he puts down one,
and sets another up.
8For in the hand of God most high
of red wine is a cup:
'Tis full of mixture, he pours forth,
and makes the wicked all
Wring out the bitter dregs thereof; yea,
and they drink them shall.
9But I for ever will declare,
I Jacob's God will praise.
10All horns of lewd men I'll cut off;
but just men's horns will raise.

Psalm 75
Asaph wrote this song for the music leader. He should use special music.
God judges people fairly
1God, we thank you!
Yes, we thank you!
You are very near to us.
People everywhere say what great things you have done.
2God says, ‘I choose the time when I will judge people,
and I will be a fair judge.
3When the earth shakes and the people in it are afraid,
I will keep its foundations strong.’
Selah.
4I say to people who are proud,
‘Do not be proud.’
I say to wicked people,
‘Do not boast about your power.
5Do not boast against God.
Do not speak with such proud words.’
6Who has the power to judge people?
Nobody from the east, or from the west,
or from the desert can be judge.
7God is the one who judges people.
He decides who to bring down
and who to lift up. #75:7 God says that one person is wrong (he brings them down) and another person is right (he lifts them up).
8The Lord holds a cup of punishment in his hand. #75:8 A cup with strong wine in it is a picture of God's anger and punishment.
It is full of wine, with spices in it.
The Lord pours out his anger from this cup.
All the wicked people in the world will have to drink it.
They will drink all of it, so that none remains.
9But as for me, I will always thank you, God.
I will sing to praise you,
the God of Jacob.
10You say, ‘I will destroy the power of wicked people.
I will give strength to my righteous people.’
