Psalms 56

PSALM 56
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
To the chief Musician upon Jonath-elem-rechokim,
Michtam of David, when the Philistines took him in Gath.
1Shew mercy, Lord, to me, for man
would swallow me outright;
He me oppresseth, while he doth
against me daily fight.
2They daily would me swallow up
that hate me spitefully;
For they be many that do fight
against me, O most High.
3When I'm afraid I'll trust in thee:
4In God I'll praise his word;
I will not fear what flesh can do,
my trust is in the Lord.
5Each day they wrest my words; their thoughts
'gainst me are all for ill.
6They meet, they lurk, they mark my steps,
waiting my soul to kill.
7But shall they by iniquity
escape thy judgments so?
O God, with indignation down
do thou the people throw.
8My wand'rings all what they have been
thou know'st, their number took;
Into thy bottle put my tears:
are they not in thy book?
9My foes shall, when I cry, turn back;
I know't, God is for me.
10In God his word I'll praise; his word
in God shall praised be.
11In God I trust; I will not fear
what man can do to me.
12Thy vows upon me are, O God:
I'll render praise to thee.
13Wilt thou not, who from death me sav'd,
my feet from falls keep free,
To walk before God in the light
of those that living be?

Psalms 56
56
(For the music leader. To the tune “A Silent Dove in the Distance”.#Psalm 56 A Silent…Distance: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. A special psalm by David when the Philistines captured him in Gath.)#1 S 21.13-15.
A prayer of trust in God
1Have pity, God Most High!
My enemies chase me all day.
2Many of them are pursuing
and attacking me,
3but even when I am afraid,
I keep on trusting you.
4I praise your promises!
I trust you and am not afraid.
No one can harm me.
5Enemies spend the whole day
finding fault with me;
all they think about
is how to do me harm.
6They attack from ambush,
watching my every step
and hoping to kill me.
7They won't get away#56.7 They…away: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
with these crimes, God,
because when you get angry,
you destroy people.
8You have kept record
of my days of wandering.
You have stored my tears
in your bottle
and counted each of them.
9When I pray, LORD God,
my enemies will retreat,
because I know for certain
that you are with me.
10I praise your promises!
11I trust you and am not afraid.
No one can harm me.
12I will keep my promises
to you, my God,
and bring you gifts.
13You protected me from death
and kept me from stumbling,
so that I would please you
and follow the light
that leads to life.
