Psalms 46

PSALM 46
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
To the chief Musician, for the sons of Korah,
A Song upon Alomoth.
1God is our refuge and our strength,
in straits a present aid;
2Therefore, although the earth remove,
we will not be afraid:
Though hills amidst the seas be cast;
3Though waters roaring make,
And troubled be; yea, though the hills,
by swelling seas do shake.
4A river is, whose streams do glad
the city of our God;
The holy place, wherein the Lord
most high hath his abode.
5God in the midst of her doth dwell;
nothing shall her remove:
The Lord to her an helper will,
and that right early, prove.
6The heathen rag'd tumultuously,
the kingdoms moved were:
The Lord God uttered his voice,
the earth did melt for fear.
7The Lord of hosts upon our side
doth constantly remain:
The God of Jacob's our refuge,
us safely to maintain.
8Come, and behold what wondrous works
have by the Lord been wrought;
Come, see what desolations
he on the earth hath brought.
9Unto the ends of all the earth
wars into peace he turns:
The bow he breaks, the spear he cuts,
in fire the chariot burns.
10Be still, and know that I am God;
among the heathen I
Will be exalted; I on earth
will be exalted high.
11Our God, who is the Lord of hosts,
is still upon our side;
The God of Jacob our refuge
for ever will abide.

God on Our Side
For the Pure and Shining One by the prophetic singers of Korah’s clan
A poetic song to the melody of “Hidden Things” # 46 As translated in the Septuagint. Other versions read “for the maidens.” Ps. 46 is known as one of the Songs of Zion. The others are Pss. 48; 76; 84; 87; 122. These are psalms that praise Jerusalem as God’s dwelling place.
1God, you’re such a safe and powerful place to find refuge!
You’re a proven help in time of trouble—
more than enough and always available whenever I need you.
2So we will never fear
even if every structure of support # 46:2 Or “earth itself.” were to crumble away.
We will not fear even when the earth quakes and shakes,
moving mountains and casting them into the sea.
3For the raging roar of stormy winds and crashing waves
cannot erode our faith in you.
Pause in his presence
4God has a constantly flowing river whose sparkling streams
bring joy and delight to his people.
His river flows right through the city of God Most High,
into his holy dwelling places. # 46:4 The plural “dwelling places” points to believers today. Each believer is now the holy dwelling place of God. God’s river flows into us and through us.
5God is in the midst of his city, # 46:5 This is a reference to Jerusalem, but today God calls his church a “city” on a hill. secure and never shaken.
At daybreak his help will be seen with the appearing of the dawn.
6When the nations are in uproar with their tottering kingdoms,
God simply raises his voice,
and the earth begins to disintegrate before him.
7Here he comes!
The Commander!
The mighty Lord of Angel Armies is on our side!
The God of Jacob fights for us!
Pause in his presence
8-9Everyone look!
Come and see the breathtaking wonders of our God.
For he brings both ruin and revival.
He’s the one who makes conflicts end
throughout the earth,
breaking and burning every weapon of war.
10Surrender your anxiety. # 46:10 Or “Let go!” The Septuagint reads “relax.”
Be still and realize that I am God.
I am God above all the nations,
and I am exalted throughout the whole earth.
11Here he stands!
The Commander!
The mighty Lord of Angel Armies is on our side!
The God of Jacob fights for us!
Pause in his presence
