Psalms 45

PSALM 45
First Version
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, for the sons of Korah, Maschil, A Song of loves.
1My heart brings forth a goodly thing;
my words that I indite
Concern the King: my tongue's a pen
of one that swift doth write.
2Thou fairer art than sons of men:
into thy lips is store
Of grace infus'd; God therefore thee
hath bless'd for evermore.
3O thou that art the mighty One,
thy sword gird on thy thigh;
Ev'n with thy glory excellent,
and with thy majesty.
4For meekness, truth, and righteousness,
in state ride prosp'rously;
And thy right hand shall thee instruct
in things that fearful be.
5Thine arrows sharply pierce the heart
of th' en'mies of the King;
And under thy subjection
the people down do bring.
6For ever and for ever is,
O God, thy throne of might;
The sceptre of thy kingdom is
a sceptre that is right.
7Thou lovest right, and hatest ill;
for God, thy God, most high,
Above thy fellows hath with th' oil
of joy anointed thee.
8Of aloes, myrrh,
and cassia, a smell thy garments had,
Out of the iv'ry palaces,
whereby they made thee glad.
9Among thy women honourable
kings' daughters were at hand:
Upon thy right hand did the queen
in gold of Ophir stand.
10O daughter, hearken and regard,
and do thine ear incline;
Likewise forget thy father's house,
and people that are thine.
11Then of the King desir'd shall be
thy beauty veh'mently:
Because he is thy Lord, do thou
him worship rev'rently.
12The daughter there of Tyre shall be
with gifts and off 'rings great:
Those of the people that are rich
thy favour shall entreat.
13Behold, the daughter of the King
all glorious is within;
And with embroideries of gold
her garments wrought have been.
14She shall be brought unto the King
in robes with needle wrought;
Her fellow-virgins following
shall unto thee be brought.
15They shall be brought with gladness great,
and mirth on ev'ry side,
Into the palace of the King,
and there they shall abide.
16Instead of those thy fathers dear,
thy children thou may'st take,
And in all places of the earth
them noble princes make.
17Thy name remember'd I will make
through ages all to be:
The people therefore evermore
shall praises give to thee.

Celebration of a Royal Wedding
For the music director; according to The Lilies. Of the sons of Korah.
A maskil. A song of love.#The Hebrew Bible counts the superscription as the first verse of the psalm; the English verse number is reduced by one
1My heart is moved with a good word;
I recite my compositions#Literally “works,” that is, the song he has composed to the king.
My tongue is the pen of a skilled scribe.
2You are the most handsome of the sons of humankind;
grace is poured out on your lips;
therefore God has blessed you forever.
3Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one,
in your splendor and your majesty.
4And in your majesty ride victoriously,#Literally “Succeed! Ride!”
because of truth and humility and righteousness.
And let your right hand teach you awesome deeds.
5Your arrows are sharp;
peoples fall under you
in the midst of the king’s enemies.
6Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.
A scepter of uprightness is
the scepter of your kingdom.
7You love righteousness and hate wickedness.
Therefore God, your God, has anointed you
from among your companions with festive oil.
8All your robes are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia.
From palaces of ivory stringed instruments gladden you.
9Kings’ daughters are among your noble ladies.
The queen stands at your right hand in gold of Ophir.
10Hear, O daughter, and discern#Literally “see” and incline your ear,
and forget your people and your father’s house.
11Let the king desire your beauty.#Or “Should the king desire … then bow down …”
Because he is your lord, therefore#Hebrew “and” bow down to him.
12Even the daughter of Tyre will come with a gift.
The rich from among people will seek your favor.#Literally “face”
13The king’s daughter is all glorious within;#That is, within her bridal chamber
her garment is of gold embroidered cloth.
14She is brought to the king in colorful garments.
The young women behind her, her attendants,
are being brought to you.
15They are led with joy and gladness.
They enter the palace of the king.
16In place of your#The pronouns and verbal forms are masculine in this verse fathers will be your sons.
You will make them princes in all the land.#Or “earth”
17I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations;
therefore peoples will praise you forever and ever.
