Psalms 42

PSALM 42
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
To the chief Musician,
Maschil, for the sons of Korah.
1Like as the hart for water-brooks
in thirst doth pant and bray;
So pants my longing soul, O God,
that come to thee I may.
2My soul for God, the living God,
doth thirst: when shall I near
Unto thy countenance approach,
and in God's sight appear?
3My tears have unto me been meat,
both in the night and day,
While unto me continually,
Where is thy God? they say.
4My soul is poured out in me,
when this I think upon;
Because that with the multitude
I heretofore had gone:
With them into God's house I went,
with voice of joy and praise;
Yea, with the multitude that kept
the solemn holy days.
5O why art thou cast down, my soul?
why in me so dismay'd?
Trust God, for I shall praise him yet,
his count'nance is mine aid.
6My God, my soul's cast down in me;
thee therefore mind I will
From Jordan's land, the Hermonites,
and ev'n from Mizar hill.
7At the noise of thy water-spouts
deep unto deep doth call;
Thy breaking waves pass over me,
yea, and thy billows all.
8His loving-kindness yet the Lord
command will in the day,
His song's with me by night; to God,
by whom I live, I'll pray:
9And I will say to God my rock,
Why me forgett'st thou so?
Why, for my foes' oppression,
thus mourning do I go?
10'Tis as a sword within my bones,
when my foes me upbraid;
Ev'n when by them, Where is thy God?
'tis daily to me said.
11O why art thou cast down, my soul?
why, thus with grief opprest,
Art thou disquieted in me?
in God still hope and rest:
For yet I know I shall him praise,
who graciously to me
The health is of my countenance,
yea, mine own God is he.

(For the one directing, Maskil, for the Bnei Korach)
1 As the deer panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my nefesh after Thee, O Elohim.
2 My nefesh thirsteth for Elohim, for El Chai. When shall I come and appear before Elohim?#42:2 in the Beis Hamikdash
3 My tears have been my lechem yomam valailah, while they continually say unto me, Where is Eloheicha?
4 When I remember these things, I pour out my nefesh within me; for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the Beis Elohim with the voice of rinnah and todah, with the multitude keeping Chag (holy day, pilgrim feast).
5 Why art thou cast down, O my nefesh? And why groanest thou#42:5 i.e., murmuring in discouragement within me? Hope thou in#42:5 i.e., wait for Elohim; for I shall yet give Him thanks, for He is the yeshu'ah (salvation) of my countenance and Elohai.
6 My nefesh is cast down within me; therefore will I remember Thee from Eretz Yarden, and from Chermonʼs peaks, from Har Mitzar.#42:6 mountain near Mt Chermon
7 Tehom el Tehom ([oceanic] deep unto [oceanic] deep) calleth at the noise of Thy waterfalls; all Thy breakers and Thy billows are passed over me.
8 Yet Hashem will command His chesed by day, and in the night His shir (song) shall be with me, my tefillah (prayer) unto the El Chayyai (G-d of my life).
9 I will say unto El Sali (G-d my Rock), Why hast Thou forgotten me? Why go I mourning because of the oppression of the oyev (enemy)?#42:9 Mt 27:46
10 As with the crushing of my atzamot (bones), mine tzorer (vexers, harassers) reproach me; while they say all day long unto me, Where is Eloheicha?
11 Why art thou cast down, O my nefesh? And why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in (wait for) Elohim; for I shall yet give Him thanks, for He is the yeshu'ah (salvation) of my countenance and Elohai.
