PSALM 40
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1I waited for the Lord my God,
and patiently did bear;
At length to me he did incline
my voice and cry to hear.
2He took me from a fearful pit,
and from the miry clay,
And on a rock he set my feet,
establishing my way.
3He put a new song in my mouth,
our God to magnify:
Many shall see it, and shall fear,
and on the Lord rely.
4O blessed is the man whose trust
upon the Lord relies;
Respecting not the proud, nor such
as turn aside to lies.
5O Lord my God, full many are
the wonders thou hast done;
Thy gracious thoughts to us-ward far
above all thoughts are gone:
In order none can reckon them
to thee: if them declare,
And speak of them I would, they more
than can be number'd are.
6No sacrifice nor offering
didst thou at all desire;
Mine ears thou bor'd: sin-off 'ring thou
and burnt didst not require:
7Then to the Lord these were my words,
I come, behold and see;
Within the volume of the book
it written is of me:
8To do thy will I take delight,
O thou my God that art;
Yea, that most holy law of thine
I have within my heart.
9Within the congregation great
I righteousness did preach:
Lo, thou dost know, O Lord, that I
refrained not my speech.
10I never did within my heart
conceal thy righteousness;
I thy salvation have declar'd,
and shown thy faithfulness:
Thy kindness, which most loving is,
concealed have not I,
Nor from the congregation great
have hid thy verity.
11Thy tender mercies, Lord, from me
O do thou not restrain;
Thy loving-kindness, and thy truth,
let them me still maintain.
12For ills past reck'ning compass me,
and mine iniquities
Such hold upon me taken have,
I cannot lift mine eyes:
They more than hairs are on mine head,
thence is my heart dismay'd.
13Be pleased, Lord, to rescue me;
Lord, hasten to mine aid.
14Sham'd and confounded be they all
that seek my soul to kill;
Yea, let them backward driven be,
and sham'd, that wish me ill.
15For a reward of this their shame
confounded let them be.
That in this manner scoffing say,
Aha, aha! to me.
16In thee let all be glad, and joy,
who seeking thee abide;
Who thy salvation love, say still,
The Lord be magnify'd.
17I'm poor and needy, yet the Lord
of me a care doth take:
Thou art my help and saviour,
my God, no tarrying make.

God’s Faithfulness and Deliverance
For the music director. Of David. A psalm.#The Hebrew Bible counts the superscription as the first verse of the psalm; the English verse number is reduced by one
1I waited patiently for Yahweh,
And he inclined to me
and heard my cry for help.
2And so he brought me up from the roaring pit,#Some read “pit of destruction”
from the miry clay.
And he put my feet upon a rock;
he made my steps steady.
3Then he put a new song in my mouth,
a praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and will trust Yahweh.
4Blessed is the man who makes Yahweh his trust
and does not turn to the proud and to those who fall away to a lie.#Or “false god”
5Many things, O Yahweh my God, you have done—
your wonderful deeds and your thoughts toward us.
There is none to compare with you.
If I tried to proclaim and tell of them,
they would be too numerous to count.
6A sacrifice and offering you do not desire.
My ears you have opened.#Literally “Ears you have dug for me.”
Burnt offering and sin offering you have not demanded.
7Then I said, “Look, I come.
In the scroll of the book
it is written concerning me:
8‘I delight to do your will, O my God,
and your law is deep within me.’ ”#Literally “in the midst of my intestines”
9I have brought good tidings of righteousness in the great congregation.
Look, I have not shut my lips.
O Yahweh, you surely know that.#Literally “you, you know”
10Your righteousness I have not hidden in the midst of my heart.
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation.
I have not concealed your loyal love or your faithfulness
from the great congregation.
11As for you, O Yahweh, do not withhold your mercies from me.
Let your loyal love and your faithfulness
continually preserve me.
12For evils without number have encompassed me.
My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see.
They are more than the hairs of my head,
and my heart fails me.
13Be pleased, O Yahweh, to deliver me.
O Yahweh, hurry to help me.
14Let them be shamed and abashed altogether
who seek to take away my life.#Or “soul”
Let them be repulsed and humiliated
who desire my harm.
15Let them be appalled because of their shame,
those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
16Let them rejoice and be glad in you,
all those who seek you.
Let them say continually, “Yahweh is great!”
—those who love your salvation.
17But I am poor and needy.
Let my Lord consider me.
You are my help and my deliverer.
O my God, do not delay.
