PSALM 34
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
A Psalm of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed.
1God will I bless all times; his praise
my mouth shall still express.
2My soul shall boast in God: the meek
shall hear with joyfulness.
3Extol the Lord with me, let us
exalt his name together.
4I sought the Lord, he heard, and did
me from all fears deliver.
5They look'd to him, and lighten'd were:
not shamed were their faces.
6This poor man cry'd, God heard, and sav'd
him from all his distresses.
7The angel of the Lord encamps,
and round encompasseth
All those about that do him fear,
and them delivereth.
8O taste and see that God is good:
who trusts in him is bless'd.
9Fear God his saints: none that him fear
shall be with want oppress'd.
10The lions young may hungry be,
and they may lack their food:
But they that truly seek the Lord
shall not lack any good.
11O children, hither do ye come,
and unto me give ear;
I shall you teach to understand
how ye the Lord should fear.
12What man is he that life desires,
to see good would live long?
13Thy lips refrain from speaking guile,
and from ill words thy tongue.
14Depart from ill, do good, seek peace,
pursue it earnestly.
15God's eyes are on the just; his ears
are open to their cry.
16The face of God is set against
those that do wickedly,
That he may quite out from the earth
cut off their memory.
17The righteous cry unto the Lord,
he unto them gives ear;
And they out of their troubles all
by him deliver'd are.
18The Lord is ever nigh to them
that be of broken sp'rit;
To them he safety doth afford
that are in heart contrite.
19The troubles that afflict the just
in number many be;
But yet at length out of them all
the Lord doth set him free.
20He carefully his bones doth keep,
whatever can befall;
That not so much as one of them
can broken be at all.
21Ill shall the wicked slay; laid waste
shall be who hate the just.
22The Lord redeems his servants' souls;
none perish that him trust.

Taste and See That the Lord Is Good
(1 Samuel 21:8–15)
Of David, when he pretended to be insane before Abimelech,#34:0 Abimelech is another name for Achish; see 1 Samuel 21–29 and 1 Kings 2:39. so that the king drove him away.#34:0 This psalm is an acrostic poem, each verse beginning with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
1I will bless the Lord at all times;
His praise will always be on my lips.
2My soul boasts in the Lord;
let the oppressed hear and rejoice.
3Magnify the Lord with me;
let us exalt His name together.
4I sought the Lord, and He answered me;
He delivered me from all my fears.
5Those who look to Him are radiant with joy;
their faces shall never be ashamed.
6This poor man called out, and the Lord heard him;
He saved him from all his troubles.
7The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him,
and he delivers them.
8Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
9Fear the Lord, you His saints,
for those who fear Him lack nothing.
10Young lions go lacking and hungry,
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
11Come, children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12Who is the man who delights in life,
who desires to see good days?
13Keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from deceitful speech.
14Turn away from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
15The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
and His ears are inclined to their cry.#34:15 LXX to their prayer
16But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil,#34:16 Cited in 1 Peter 3:10–12
to wipe out all memory of them from the earth.
17The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears;
He delivers them from all their troubles.
18The Lord is near to the brokenhearted;
He saves the contrite in spirit.
19Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him from them all.
20He protects all his bones;
not one of them will be broken.#34:20 Cited in John 19:36
21Evil will slay the wicked,
and the haters of the righteous will be condemned.
22The Lord redeems His servants,
and none who take refuge in Him will be condemned.
