Psalms 25

PSALM 25
First Version
Meter: 6,6,8,6
1To thee I lift my soul:
2O Lord, I trust in thee:
My God, let me not be asham'd,
nor foes triumph o'er me.
3Let none that wait on thee
be put to shame at all;
But those that without cause transgress,
let shame upon them fall.
4Shew me thy ways, O Lord;
thy paths, O teach thou me:
5And do thou lead me in thy truth,
therein my teacher be:
For thou art God that dost
to me salvation send,
And I upon thee all the day
expecting do attend.
6Thy tender mercies, Lord,
I pray thee to remember,
And loving-kindnesses; for they
have been of old for ever.
7My sins and faults of youth
do thou, O Lord, forget:
After thy mercy think on me,
and for thy goodness great.
8God good and upright is:
the way he'll sinners show.
9The meek in judgment he will guide,
and make his path to know.
10The whole paths of the Lord
are truth and mercy sure,
To those that do his cov'nant keep,
and testimonies pure.
11Now, for thine own name's sake,
O Lord, I thee entreat
To pardon mine iniquity;
for it is very great.
12What man is he that fears
the Lord, and doth him serve?
Him shall he teach the way that he
shall choose, and still observe.
13His soul shall dwell at ease;
and his posterity
Shall flourish still, and of the earth
inheritors shall be.
14With those that fear him is
the secret of the Lord;
The knowledge of his covenant
he will to them afford.
15Mine eyes upon the Lord
continually are set:
For he it is that shall bring forth
my feet out of the net.
16Turn unto me thy face,
and to me mercy show;
Because that I am desolate,
and am brought very low.
17My heart's griefs are increas'd:
me from distress relieve.
18See mine affliction and my pain,
and all my sins forgive.
19Consider thou my foes,
because they many are;
And it a cruel hatred is
which they against me bear.
20O do thou keep my soul,
do thou deliver me:
And let me never be asham'd,
because I trust in thee.
21Let uprightness and truth
keep me, who thee attend.
22Redemption, Lord, to Israel
from all his troubles send.

A Prayer for Guidance, Deliverance, and Forgiveness
Of David.#The Hebrew Bible counts the superscription as the first verse of the psalm
1To you, O Yahweh, I lift up my soul.
2O my God, I trust you; let me not be put to shame.
Do not let my enemies exult over me.
3Indeed, none who wait for you should be put to shame.
Those who betray without cause should be put to shame.
4Make me know your ways, O Yahweh.
Teach me your paths.
5Cause me to walk in your truth and teach me,
because you are the God of my salvation.
I await you all day long.#Literally “all of the day”
6Remember your compassion, O Yahweh,
and your acts of loyal love,
because they are from of old.
7Do not remember
the sins of my youth or my transgressions.
According to your loyal love remember me if you will,
for the sake of your goodness, O Yahweh.
8Good and right is Yahweh;
therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
9He causes the humble to walk in justice,
and teaches the humble his way.
10All the paths of Yahweh are loyal love and faithfulness
for those who keep his covenant and statutes.#Or “covenant statutes”
11Also, for the sake of your name, O Yahweh,
forgive my sin, because it is great.
12Who is the man fearing Yahweh?
He will instruct him in the way he should choose.
13His soul will lodge in prosperity,
and his offspring will possess the land.
14Intimate fellowship with Yahweh is for those who fear him,
and he makes known his covenant to them.
15My eyes are continually toward Yahweh,
because he will take my feet from the net.
16Turn to me and have mercy on me
because I am lonely and afflicted.
17Remove the troubles of my heart;
bring me out from my distresses.
18Consider my affliction and trouble,
and forgive#Or “take away” all my sins.
19Consider that my enemies are many,
and they hate me with violent hatred.
20Protect my life and deliver me.
Let me not be put to shame, because I take shelter in you.
21Let integrity and uprightness preserve me,
because I wait for you.
22O God, redeem Israel
from all its troubles.
