Psalms 23

PSALM 23
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want.
2He makes me down to lie
In pastures green: he leadeth me
the quiet waters by.
3My soul he doth restore again;
and me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
ev'n for his own name's sake.
4Yea, though I walk in death's dark vale,
yet will I fear none ill:
For thou art with me; and thy rod
and staff me comfort still.
5My table thou hast furnished
in presence of my foes;
My head thou dost with oil anoint,
and my cup overflows.
6Goodness and mercy all my life
shall surely follow me:
And in God's house for evermore
my dwelling-place shall be.

Yahweh the Shepherd
A psalm of David.#The Hebrew Bible counts the superscription as the first verse of the psalm
1Yahweh is my shepherd;
I will not lack for anything.
2In grassy pastures he makes me lie down;
by quiet waters he leads me.
3He restores my life.#Or “my soul”
He leads me in correct paths#Literally “paths of righteousness”
for the sake of his name.
4Even when I walk in a dark valley, I fear no evil
because you are with me.
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5You prepare before me a table
in the presence of my oppressors.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup is overflowing.
6Surely goodness and loyal love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will stay#Hebrew “return” in the house#Or “temple” of Yahweh
for a very long time.#Literally “for length of days”
