PSALM 22
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar,
A Psalm of David.
1My God, my God, why hast thou me
forsaken? why so far
Art thou from helping me, and from
my words that roaring are?
2All day, my God, to thee I cry,
yet am not heard by thee;
And in the season of the night
I cannot silent be.
3But thou art holy, thou that dost
inhabit Isr'el's praise.
4Our fathers hop'd in thee, they hop'd
and thou didst them release.
5When unto thee they sent their cry,
to them deliv'rance came:
Because they put their trust in thee,
they were not put to shame.
6But as for me, a worm I am,
and as no man am priz'd:
Reproach of men I am, and by
the people am despis'd.
7All that me see laugh me to scorn;
shoot out the lip do they;
They nod and shake their heads at me,
and, mocking, thus do say,
8This man did trust in God, that he
would free him by his might:
Let him deliver him, sith he
had in him such delight.
9But thou art he out of the womb
that didst me safely take;
When I was on my mother's breasts
thou me to hope didst make.
10And I was cast upon thy care,
ev'n from the womb till now;
And from my mother's belly, Lord,
my God and guide art thou.
11Be not far off, for grief is near,
and none to help is found.
12Bulls many compass me, strong bulls
of Bashan me surround.
13Their mouths they open'd wide on me,
upon me gape did they,
Like to a lion ravening
and roaring for his prey.
14Like water I'm pour'd out, my bones
all out of joint do part:
Amidst my bowels, as the wax,
so melted is my heart.
15My strength is like a potsherd dry'd;
my tongue it cleaveth fast
Unto my jaws; and to the dust
of death thou brought me hast.
16For dogs have compass'd me about:
the wicked, that did meet
In their assembly, me inclos'd;
they pierc'd my hands and feet.
17I all my bones may tell; they do
upon me look and stare.
18Upon my vesture lots they cast,
and clothes among them share.
19But be not far, O Lord, my strength;
haste to give help to me.
20From sword my soul, from pow'r of dogs
my darling set thou free.
21Out of the roaring lion's mouth
do thou me shield and save:
For from the horns of unicorns
an ear to me thou gave.
22I will shew forth thy name unto
those that my brethren are;
Amidst the congregation
thy praise I will declare.
23Praise ye the Lord, who do him fear;
him glorify all ye
The seed of Jacob: fear him all
that Isr'el's children be.
24For he despis'd not nor abhorr'd
th' afflicted's misery;
Nor from him hid his face, but heard
when he to him did cry.
25Within the congregation great
my praise shall be of thee;
My vows before them that him fear
shall be perform'd by me.
26The meek shall eat,
and shall be fill'd;
they also praise shall give
Unto the Lord that do him seek:
your heart shall ever live.
27All ends of th' earth remember shall,
and turn the Lord unto;
All kindreds of the nations
to him shall homage do:
28Because the kingdom to the Lord
doth appertain as his;
Likewise among the nations
the Governor he is.
29Earth's fat ones eat,
and worship shall:
all who to dust descend
Shall bow to him; none of them can
his soul from death defend.
30A seed shall service do to him;
unto the Lord it shall
Be for a generation
reckon'd in ages all.
31They shall come, and they shall declare
his truth and righteousness
Unto a people yet unborn,
and that he hath done this.

The Suffering, Praise, and Posterity of the Messiah
To the Chief Musician. Set to “The Deer of the Dawn.” A Psalm of David.
1My #(Matt. 27:46; Mark 15:34)God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
Why are You so far from helping Me,
And from the words of My groaning?
2O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear;
And in the night season, and am not silent.
3But You are holy,
Enthroned in the #Deut. 10:21; Ps. 148:14praises of Israel.
4Our fathers trusted in You;
They trusted, and You delivered them.
5They cried to You, and were delivered;
#Is. 49:23They trusted in You, and were not ashamed.
6But I am #Job 25:6; Is. 41:14a worm, and no man;
#Ps. 109:25; (Is. 53:3); Matt. 27:39–44A reproach of men, and despised by the people.
7#Matt. 27:39; Mark 15:29All those who see Me ridicule Me;
They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8“He#Matt. 27:43; Luke 23:35 trusted in the Lord, let Him rescue Him;
#Ps. 91:14Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!”
9#(Ps. 71:5, 6)But You are He who took Me out of the womb;
You made Me trust while on My mother’s breasts.
10I was cast upon You from birth.
From My mother’s womb
#(Is. 46:3; 49:1); Luke 1:35You have been My God.
11Be not far from Me,
For trouble is near;
For there is none to help.
12#Ps. 22:21; 68:30Many bulls have surrounded Me;
Strong bulls of #Deut. 32:14Bashan have encircled Me.
13#Job 16:10; Ps. 35:21; Lam. 2:16; 3:46They gape at Me with their mouths,
Like a raging and roaring lion.
14I am poured out like water,
#Ps. 31:10; Dan. 5:6And all My bones are out of joint;
My heart is like wax;
It has melted within Me.
15#Prov. 17:22My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And #John 19:28My tongue clings to My jaws;
You have brought Me to the dust of death.
16For dogs have surrounded Me;
The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me.
#Is. 53:7; Matt. 27:35; John 20:25They pierced My hands and My feet;
17I can count all My bones.
#Luke 23:27, 35They look and stare at Me.
18#Matt. 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34; John 19:24They divide My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.
19But You, O Lord, do not be far from Me;
O My Strength, hasten to help Me!
20Deliver Me from the sword,
#Ps. 35:17My precious life from the power of the dog.
21#2 Tim. 4:17Save Me from the lion’s mouth
And from the horns of the wild oxen!
#Is. 34:7You have answered Me.
22#Matt. 4:23; Mark 1:21, 39; Heb. 2:12I will declare Your name to #(Rom. 8:29)My brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.
23#Ps. 135:19, 20You who fear the Lord, praise Him!
All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him,
And fear Him, all you offspring of Israel!
24For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted;
Nor has He hidden His face from Him;
But #Ps. 31:22; Heb. 5:7when He cried to Him, He heard.
25#Ps. 35:18; 40:9, 10My praise shall be of You in the great assembly;
#Ps. 61:8; Eccl. 5:4I will pay My vows before those who fear Him.
26The poor shall eat and be satisfied;
Those who seek Him will praise the Lord.
Let your heart live forever!
27All the ends of the world
Shall remember and turn to the Lord,
And all the families of the nations
Shall worship before You.
28#(Ps. 47:7); Obad. 21; (Zech. 14:9); Matt. 6:13For the kingdom is the Lord’s,
And He rules over the nations.
29#Ps. 17:10; 45:12; Hab. 1:16All the prosperous of the earth
Shall eat and worship;
#Ps. 28:1; (Is. 26:19)All those who go down to the dust
Shall bow before Him,
Even he who cannot keep himself alive.
30A posterity shall serve Him.
It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation,
31They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born,
That He has done this.
