Psalms 138
138
PSALM 138
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
A Psalm of David.
1Thee will I praise with all my heart,
I will sing praise to thee
2Before the gods: And worship will
toward thy sanctuary.
I'll praise thy name, ev'n for thy truth,
and kindness of thy love;
For thou thy word hast magnify'd
all thy great name above.
3Thou didst me answer in the day
when I to thee did cry;
And thou my fainting soul with strength
didst strengthen inwardly.
4All kings upon the earth that are
shall give thee praise, O Lord,
When as they from thy mouth shall hear
thy true and faithful word.
5Yea, in the righteous ways of God
with gladness they shall sing:
For great's the glory of the Lord;
who doth for ever reign.
6Though God be high, yet he respects
all those that lowly be;
Whereas the proud and lofty ones
afar off knoweth he.
7Though I in midst of trouble walk,
I life from thee shall have:
'Gainst my foes' wrath thou'lt stretch thine hand;
thy right hand shall me save.
8Surely that which concerneth me
the Lord will perfect make:
Lord, still thy mercy lasts; do not
thine own hands' works forsake.

Psalms 138

Psalm 138
David wrote this song.
Thank God for who he is
1I will thank you, Lord, with my whole being.
I will sing and praise you in front of the gods. #138:1 ‘gods’ or ‘angels’. David may be telling the false gods that the Lord is the only true God.
2I look towards your holy temple,
and I bend down to worship you.
I thank you for who you are.
You love your people and they can always trust you.
You are more famous than anyone,
because you always do what you promise.
3When I prayed to you, you answered me.
You made me brave and strong.
4All the kings in the world will thank you, Lord,
when they hear the promises that you have made.
5They will sing about the things that you have done,
because they see that you are great, Lord.
6Yes, the Lord is high above the earth.
But he takes care of humble people.
He also knows what proud people are doing,
even if they try to hide. #138:6 This is about two groups of people: humble people and proud people. God is high above us in heaven. But he can still see people who need help. He also sees the proud people. There is nowhere for them to hide.
7When there is danger all round me,
you help me to be strong.
When my enemy is angry, you fight against him.
You save me with your strong right hand. #138:7 God's ‘strong right hand’ means his power to work.
8The Lord stands with me to do what he has promised.
Yes, Lord, your faithful love will always continue.
You have made us who we are,
so do not leave us now!
