Psalms 126

PSALM 126
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1When Sion's bondage God turn'd back,
as men that dream'd were we.
2Then fill'd with laughter was our mouth,
our tongue with melody:
They 'mong the heathen said, The Lord
great things for them hath wrought.
3The Lord hath done great things for us,
whence joy to us is brought.
4As streams of water in the south,
our bondage, Lord, recall.
5Who sow in tears, a reaping time
of joy enjoy they shall.
6That man who, bearing precious seed,
in going forth doth mourn,
He doubtless, bringing back his sheaves,
rejoicing shall return.

Zion’s Restoration
A song of ascents.
1When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, # Or Lord returned those of Zion who had been captives
we were like those who dream. # Ps 85:1; Jr 29:14
2Our mouths were filled with laughter then, # Jb 8:21
and our tongues with shouts of joy. # Ps 51:14
Then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.” # Ps 71:19
3The Lord had done great things for us;
we were joyful. # Is 25:9
4Restore our fortunes, # Or Return our captives Lord,
like watercourses in the Negev. # Is 35:6; 43:19
5Those who sow in tears
will reap with shouts of joy. # Jr 31:9
6Though one goes along weeping,
carrying the bag of seed,
he will surely come back with shouts of joy,
carrying his sheaves. # Is 35:10; 51:11
