Psalms 126

PSALM 126
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1When Sion's bondage God turn'd back,
as men that dream'd were we.
2Then fill'd with laughter was our mouth,
our tongue with melody:
They 'mong the heathen said, The Lord
great things for them hath wrought.
3The Lord hath done great things for us,
whence joy to us is brought.
4As streams of water in the south,
our bondage, Lord, recall.
5Who sow in tears, a reaping time
of joy enjoy they shall.
6That man who, bearing precious seed,
in going forth doth mourn,
He doubtless, bringing back his sheaves,
rejoicing shall return.

The Reversal of Zion’s Fortunes
1A song of ascents.
I
When the Lord restored the captives of Zion,#Ps 14:7.
we thought we were dreaming.
2Then our mouths were filled with laughter;
our tongues sang for joy.#Jb 8:21.
Then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord had done great things for them.”
3The Lord has done great things for us;
Oh, how happy we were!
4Restore our captives, Lord,
like the dry stream beds of the Negeb.#Like the dry stream beds of the Negeb: the psalmist prays for rain in such abundance that the dry riverbeds will run.
II
5Those who sow in tears
will reap with cries of joy.#Bar 4:23; Is 65:19.
6Those who go forth weeping,
carrying sacks of seed,
Will return with cries of joy,
carrying their bundled sheaves.
