Psalms 124
124
PSALM 124
First Version
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1Had not the Lord been on our side,
may Israel now say;
2Had not the Lord been on our side,
when men rose us to slay;
3They had us swallow'd quick, when as
their wrath 'gainst us did flame:
4Waters had cover'd us, our soul
had sunk beneath the stream.
5Then had the waters, swelling high,
over our soul made way.
6Bless'd be the Lord, who to their teeth
us gave not for a prey.
7Our soul's escaped, as a bird
out of the fowler's snare;
The snare asunder broken is,
and we escaped are.
8Our sure and all-sufficient help
is in JEHOVAH's name;
His name who did the heav'n create,
and who the earth did frame.

1A song of degrees, or Psalme of David. If the Lord had not bene on our side, (may Israel now say) 2If the Lord had not bene on our side, when men rose vp against vs, 3They had then swallowed vs vp quicke, when their wrath was kindled against vs. 4Then the waters had drowned vs, and the streame had gone ouer our soule: 5Then had the swelling waters gone ouer our soule. 6Praysed be the Lord, which hath not giuen vs as a praye vnto their teeth. 7Our soule is escaped, euen as a bird out of the snare of the foulers: the snare is broken, and we are deliuered. 8Our helpe is in the Name of the Lord, which hath made heauen and earth.
