Psalms 12

PSALM 12
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
To the chief Musician upon Sheminith,
A Psalm of David.
1Help, Lord, because the godly man
doth daily fade away;
And from among the sons of men
the faithful do decay.
2Unto his neighbour ev'ry one
doth utter vanity:
They with a double heart do speak,
and lips of flattery.
3God shall cut off all flatt'ring lips,
tongues that speak proudly thus,
4We'll with our tongue prevail, our lips
are ours: who's lord o'er us?
5For poor oppress'd,
and for the sighs of needy, rise will
I, Saith God, and him in safety set
from such as him defy.
6The words of God are words most pure;
they be like silver try'd
In earthen furnace, seven times
that hath been purify'd.
7Lord, thou shalt them preserve and keep
for ever from this race.
8On each side walk the wicked, when
vile men are high in place.

Psalms 12

A Prayer Against Liars
For the director of music. Upon the sheminith. A psalm of David.
1Save me, Lord, because the good people are all gone;
no true believers are left on earth.
2Everyone lies to his neighbors;
they say one thing and mean another.
3The Lord will stop those flattering lips
and cut off those bragging tongues.
4They say, “Our tongues will help us win.
We can say what we wish; no one is our master.”
5But the Lord says,
“I will now rise up,
because the poor are being hurt.
Because of the moans of the helpless,
I will give them the help they want.”
6The Lord’s words are pure,
like silver purified by fire,
like silver purified seven times over.
7Lord, you will keep us safe;
you will always protect us from such people.
8But the wicked are all around us;
everyone loves what is wrong.
