PSALM 118
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1O praise the Lord, for he is good;
his mercy lasteth ever.
2Let those of Israel now say,
His mercy faileth never.
3Now let the house of Aaron say,
His mercy lasteth ever.
4Let those that fear the Lord now say,
His mercy faileth never.
5I in distress call'd on the Lord;
the Lord did answer me:
He in a large place did me set,
from trouble made me free.
6The mighty Lord is on my side,
I will not be afraid;
For any thing that man can do
I shall not be dismay'd.
7The Lord doth take my part with them
that help to succour me:
Therefore on those that do me hate
I my desire shall see.
8Better it is to trust in God
than trust in man's defence;
9Better to trust in God than make
princes our confidence.
10The nations, joining all in one,
did compass me about:
But in the Lord's most holy name
I shall them all root out.
11They compass'd me about; I say,
they compass'd me about:
But in the Lord's most holy name
I shall them all root out.
12Like bees they compass'd me about;
like unto thorns that flame
They quenched are: for them shall I
destroy in God's own name.
13Thou sore hast thrust, that I might fall,
but my Lord helped me.
14God my salvation is become,
my strength and song is he.
15In dwellings of the righteous
is heard the melody
Of joy and health: the Lord's right hand
doth ever valiantly.
16The right hand of the mighty Lord
exalted is on high;
The right hand of the mighty Lord
doth ever valiantly.
17I shall not die, but live,
and shall the works of God discover.
18The Lord hath me chastised sore,
but not to death giv'n over.
19O set ye open unto me
the gates of righteousness;
Then will I enter into them,
and I the Lord will bless.
20This is the gate of God, by it
the just shall enter in.
21Thee will I praise, for thou me heard'st
and hast my safety been.
22That stone is made head corner-stone,
which builders did despise:
23This is the doing of the Lord,
and wondrous in our eyes.
24This is the day God made, in it
we'll joy triumphantly.
25Save now, I pray thee, Lord; I pray,
send now prosperity.
26Blessed is he in God's great name
that cometh us to save:
We, from the house which to the Lord
pertains, you blessed have.
27God is the Lord, who unto us
hath made light to arise:
Bind ye unto the altar's horns
with cords the sacrifice.
28Thou art my God, I'll thee exalt;
my God, I will thee praise.
29Give thanks to God, for he is good:
his mercy lasts always.

Psalm 118
God is good, so thank him #118:1 Verses 1-4 tell everybody to thank the Lord, because he is good. Verses 5-7 tell us what God did to send help to Israel. In verses 8-9, the psalm teaches us that we can trust the Lord more than people. In verses 10-13, we read that the enemy was attacking Israel. Verses 14-18 tell us that we should be happy when God helps us. He has the power and authority to help us when we have troubles. Verses 21-24 again tell us what God has done. He has rescued his people.
1Thank the Lord, because he is good.
His faithful love will always be with us.
2Israel's people must now say,
‘His faithful love will always be with us.’
3Aaron's family, the priests, must now say,
‘His faithful love will always be with us.’
4Everyone who serves the Lord must now say,
‘His faithful love will always be with us.’
5I was in trouble,
so I called to the Lord to help me.
The Lord answered me
and he made me free.
6The Lord is there to help me,
so I will not be afraid.
What can any person do to hurt me?
7The Lord is with me as my helper.
As for those people who hate me,
I will win against them.
8It is better to go to the Lord to keep you safe,
than to trust in people.
9It is better to trust the Lord to keep you safe,
than to trust even in important people.
10All the nations were ready to attack me,
but I turned them away
by the power of the Lord.
11Yes, they were all round me, ready to attack,
but I won against them
in the name of the Lord.
12They were all round me like a cloud of bees!
But they were like a fire in a thorn bush
that burns quickly and has soon gone.
I turned them away
by the power of the Lord.
13My enemies attacked me
and they tried to knock me down!
But the Lord helped me.
14The Lord makes me strong
and he takes care of me.
He is the one who keeps me safe.
15Listen to the happy shouts of God's people in their tents!
They have won against their enemies,
because the Lord has power to do great things.
16Yes, the Lord has lifted up his strong right hand.
He has the strength to win the battle!
17I will not die. Instead, I will live.
I will tell everyone what the Lord has done.
18The Lord has punished me very much,
but he has not let me die.
19Open the gates of the temple!
I will go in there,
and I will thank the Lord.
20This is the Lord's gate.
Righteous people can go in through it.
21I will thank you, Lord,
because you answered my prayer.
You have rescued me.
22The builders threw away a certain stone.
But now that stone has become the most important stone
at the corner of the building.
23The Lord has done this.
And we can see that it is wonderful! #118:23 See Matthew 21:42; Mark 12:10-11; Luke 20:17; Acts 4:11; 1 Peter 2:7.
24This is the day that the Lord has done a great thing.
We will be very happy today!
25 Lord, please save us now!
Lord, please help us to do well!
26May the Lord bless the man who comes with his authority! #118:26 See Matthew 21:9; 23:39; Mark 11:9; Luke 13:35; 19:38; John 12:13.
We praise you from here,
in the house of the Lord.
27The Lord is our God.
He has caused his light to shine on us.
Make a happy festival!
Take branches in your hands,
and go to offer a sacrifice on the altar.
28You are my God,
and I will thank you.
You are my God,
and I will say how great you are.
29Thank the Lord, because he is good.
His faithful love will always be with us.
