PSALM 107
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1Praise God, for he is good: for still
his mercies lasting be.
2Let God's redeem'd say so, whom he
from th' en'my's hand did free;
3And gather'd them out of the lands,
from north, south, east, nd west.
4They stray'd in desert's pathless way,
no city found to rest.
5For thirst and hunger in them faints
6their soul. When straits them press,
They cry unto the Lord,
and he them frees from their distress.
7Them also in a way to walk
that right is he did guide,
That they might to a city go,
wherein they might abide.
8O that men to the Lord would give
praise for his goodness then,
And for his works of wonder done
unto the sons of men!
9For he the soul that longing is
doth fully satisfy;
With goodness he the hungry soul
doth fill abundantly.
10Such as shut up in darkness deep,
and in death's shade abide,
Whom strongly hath affliction bound,
and irons fast have ty'd:
11Because against the words of God
they wrought rebelliously,
And they the counsel did contemn
of him that is most High:
12Their heart he did bring down with grief,
they fell, no help could have.
13In trouble then they cry'd to God,
he them from straits did save.
14He out of darkness did them bring,
and from death's shade them take;
These bands, wherewith they had been bound,
asunder quite he brake.
15O that men to the Lord would give
praise for his goodness then,
And for his works of wonder done
unto the sons of men!
16Because the mighty gates of brass
in pieces he did tear,
By him in sunder also cut
the bars of iron were.
17Fools, for their sin, and their offence,
do sore affliction bear;
18All kind of meat their soul abhors;
they to death's gates draw near.
19In grief they cry to God; he saves
them from their miseries.
20He sends his word, them heals,
and them from their destructions frees.
21O that men to the Lord would give
praise for his goodness then,
And for his works of wonder done
unto the sons of men!
22And let them sacrifice to him
off 'rings of thankfulness;
And let them shew abroad his works
in songs of joyfulness.
23Who go to sea in ships,
and in great waters trading be,
24Within the deep these men God's works
and his great wonders see.
25For he commands,
and forth in haste the stormy tempest flies,
Which makes the sea with rolling waves
aloft to swell and rise.
26They mount to heav'n, then to the depths
they do go down again;
Their soul doth faint and melt away
with trouble and with pain.
27They reel and stagger like one drunk,
at their wit's end they be:
28Then they to God in trouble cry,
who them from straits doth free.
29The storm is chang'd into a calm
at his command and will;
So that the waves, which rag'd before,
now quiet are and still.
30Then are they glad, because at rest
and quiet now they be:
So to the haven he them brings,
which they desir'd to see.
31O that men to the Lord would give
praise for his goodness then,
And for his works of wonder done
unto the sons of men!
32Among the people gathered
let them exalt his name;
Among assembled elders spread
his most renowned fame.
33He to dry land turns water-springs,
and floods to wilderness;
34For sins of those that dwell therein,
fat land to barrenness.
35The burnt and parched wilderness
to water-pools he brings;
The ground that was dry'd up before
he turns to water-springs:
36And there, for dwelling, he a place
doth to the hungry give,
That they a city may prepare
commodiously to live.
37There sow they fields, and vineyards plant,
to yield fruits of increase.
38His blessing makes them multiply,
lets not their beasts decrease.
39Again they are diminished,
and very low brought down,
Through sorrow and affliction,
and great oppression.
40He upon princes pours contempt,
and causeth them to stray,
And wander in a wilderness,
wherein there is no way.
41Yet setteth he the poor on high
from all his miseries,
And he, much like unto a flock,
doth make him families.
42They that are righteous shall rejoice,
when they the same shall see;
And, as ashamed, stop her mouth
shall all iniquity.
43Whoso is wise, and will these things
observe, and them record,
Ev'n they shall understand the love
and kindness of the Lord.

BOOK FIVE: Psalms 107—150
Thanksgiving to the Lord for His Great Works of Deliverance
1Oh, #1 Chr. 16:34; Ps. 106:1; Jer. 33:11give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.
2Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy,
3And #Is. 43:5, 6; Jer. 29:14; 31:8–10; (Ezek. 39:27, 28)gathered out of the lands,
From the east and from the west,
From the north and from the south.
4They wandered in #Num. 14:33; 32:13; (Deut. 2:7; 32:10); Josh. 5:6; 14:10the wilderness in a desolate way;
They found no city to dwell in.
5Hungry and thirsty,
Their soul fainted in them.
6#Ps. 50:15; (Hos. 5:15)Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He delivered them out of their distresses.
7And He led them forth by the #Ezra 8:21; Ps. 5:8; Jer. 31:9right way,
That they might go to a city for a dwelling place.
8#Ps. 107:15, 21Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
9For #(Ps. 34:10; Luke 1:53)He satisfies the longing soul,
And fills the hungry soul with goodness.
10Those who #(Is. 42:7; Mic. 7:8; Luke 1:79)sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
#Job 36:8Bound in affliction and irons—
11Because they #Lam. 3:42rebelled against the words of God,
And despised #(Ps. 73:24)the counsel of the Most High,
12Therefore He brought down their heart with labor;
They fell down, and there was #Ps. 22:11none to help.
13Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
14#Ps. 68:6He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
And broke their chains in pieces.
15Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
16For He has #Is. 45:1, 2broken the gates of bronze,
And cut the bars of iron in two.
17Fools, #(Is. 65:6, 7; Jer. 30:14, 15); Lam. 3:39; Ezek. 24:23because of their transgression,
And because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
18#Job 33:20Their soul abhorred all manner of food,
And they #Job 33:22drew near to the gates of death.
19Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
20#Matt. 8:8He sent His word and #2 Kin. 20:5; Ps. 30:2healed them,
And #Job 33:28, 30delivered them from their destructions.
21Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
22#Lev. 7:12; Ps. 50:14; Heb. 13:15Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving,
And #Ps. 9:11declare His works with rejoicing.
23Those who go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on great waters,
24They see the works of the Lord,
And His wonders in the deep.
25For He commands and #Jon. 1:4raises the stormy wind,
Which lifts up the waves of the sea.
26They mount up to the heavens,
They go down again to the depths;
#Ps. 22:14Their soul melts because of trouble.
27They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man,
And are at their wits’ end.
28Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He brings them out of their distresses.
29#Ps. 89:9; Matt. 8:26; Luke 8:24He calms the storm,
So that its waves are still.
30Then they are glad because they are quiet;
So He guides them to their desired haven.
31#Ps. 107:8, 15, 21Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
32Let them exalt Him also #Ps. 22:22, 25in the assembly of the people,
And praise Him in the company of the elders.
33He #1 Kin. 17:1, 7; Is. 50:2turns rivers into a wilderness,
And the watersprings into dry ground;
34A #Gen. 13:10; Deut. 29:23fruitful land into barrenness,
For the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
35#Ps. 114:8; (Is. 41:17, 18)He turns a wilderness into pools of water,
And dry land into watersprings.
36There He makes the hungry dwell,
That they may establish a city for a dwelling place,
37And sow fields and plant vineyards,
That they may yield a fruitful harvest.
38#Gen. 12:2; 17:16, 20He also blesses them, and they multiply greatly;
And He does not let their cattle #Ex. 1:7; (Deut. 7:14)decrease.
39When they are #2 Kin. 10:32diminished and brought low
Through oppression, affliction, and sorrow,
40#Job 12:21, 24He pours contempt on princes,
And causes them to wander in the wilderness where there is no way;
41#1 Sam. 2:8; (Ps. 113:7, 8)Yet He sets the poor on high, far from affliction,
And #Ps. 78:52makes their families like a flock.
42#Job 5:15, 16The righteous see it and rejoice,
And all #Job 5:16; Ps. 63:11; (Rom. 3:19)iniquity stops its mouth.
43#Ps. 64:9; Jer. 9:12; (Hos. 14:9)Whoever is wise will observe these things,
And they will understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.
