Psalms 106

PSALM 106
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1Give praise and thanks unto the Lord,
for bountiful is he;
His tender mercy doth endure
unto eternity.
2God's mighty works who can express?
or shew forth all his praise?
3Blessed are they that judgment keep,
and justly do always.
4Remember me, Lord, with that love
which thou to thine dost bear;
With thy salvation, O my God,
to visit me draw near:
5That I thy chosen's good may see,
and in their joy rejoice;
And may with thine inheritance
triumph with cheerful voice.
6We with our fathers sinned have,
and of iniquity
Too long we have the workers been;
we have done wickedly.
7The wonders great, which thou, O Lord,
didst work in Egypt land,
Our fathers, though they saw, yet them
they did not understand:
And they thy mercies' multitude
kept not in memory;
But at the sea, ev'n the Red sea,
provok'd him grievously.
8Nevertheless he saved them,
ev'n for his own name's sake;
That so he might to be well known
his mighty power make.
9When he the Red sea did rebuke,
then dried up it was:
Through depths, as through the wilderness,
he safely made them pass.
10From hands of those that hated them
he did his people save;
And from the en'my's cruel hand
to them redemption gave.
11The waters overwhelm'd their foes;
not one was left alive.
12Then they believ'd his word,
and praise to him in songs did give.
13But soon did they his mighty works
forget unthankfully,
And on his counsel and his will
did not wait patiently;
14But much did lust in wilderness,
and God in desert tempt.
15He gave them what they sought, but to
their soul he leanness sent.
16And against Moses in the camp
their envy did appear;
At Aaron they, the saint of God,
envious also were.
17Therefore the earth did open wide,
and Dathan did devour,
And all Abiram's company
did cover in that hour.
18Likewise among their company
a fire was kindled then;
And so the hot consuming flame
burnt up these wicked men.
19Upon the hill of Horeb they
an idol-calf did frame,
A molten image they did make,
and worshipped the same.
20And thus their glory, and their God,
most vainly changed they
Into the likeness of an ox
that eateth grass or hay.
21They did forget the mighty God,
that had their saviour been,
By whom such great things brought to pass
they had in Egypt seen.
22In Ham's land he did wondrous works,
things terrible did he,
When he his mighty hand and arm
stretch'd out at the Red sea.
23Then said he, He would them destroy,
had not, his wrath to stay,
His chosen Moses stood in breach,
that them he should not slay.
24Yea, they despis'd the pleasant land,
believed not his word:
25But in their tents they murmured,
not heark'ning to the Lord.
26Therefore in desert them to slay
he lifted up his hand:
27'Mong nations to o'erthrow their seed,
and scatter in each land.
28They unto Baal-peor did
themselves associate;
The sacrifices of the dead
they did profanely eat.
29Thus, by their lewd inventions,
they did provoke his ire;
And then upon them suddenly
the plague brake in as fire.
30Then Phin'has rose, and justice did,
and so the plague did cease;
31That to all ages counted was
to him for righteousness.
32And at the waters, where they strove,
they did him angry make,
In such sort, that it fared ill
with Moses for their sake:
33Because they there his spirit meek
provoked bitterly,
So that he utter'd with his lips
words unadvisedly.
34Nor, as the Lord commanded them,
did they the nations slay:
35But with the heathen mingled were,
and learn'd of them their way.
36And they their idols serv'd, which did
a snare unto them turn.
37Their sons and daughters they to dev'ls
in sacrifice did burn.
38In their own children's guiltless blood
their hands they did imbrue,
Whom to Canaan's idols they
for sacrifices slew:
So was the land defil'd with blood.
39They stain'd with their own way,
And with their own inventions
a whoring they did stray.
40Against his people kindled was
the wrath of God therefore,
Insomuch that he did his own
inheritance abhor.
41He gave them to the heathen's hand;
their foes did them command.
42Their en'mies them oppress'd, they were
made subject to their hand.
43He many times deliver'd them;
but with their counsel so
They him provok'd, that for their sin
they were brought very low.
44Yet their affliction he beheld,
when he did hear their cry:
45And he for them his covenant
did call to memory;
After his mercies' multitude
46he did repent: And made
Them to be pity'd of all those
who did them captive lead.
47O Lord our God, us save,
and gather the heathen from among,
That we thy holy name may praise
in a triumphant song.
48Bless'd be JEHOVAH, Isr'el's God,
to all eternity:
Let all the people say, Amen.
Praise to the Lord give ye.

Psalm 106
The Lord is good! #106:1 The writer remembers that the Israelites have often turned against God. God has done many great things to rescue them, but they have still not obeyed him.
1 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Thank the Lord, because he is good.
His faithful love will always be with us.
2The great things that the Lord has done
are too many to tell!
Nobody can praise him enough.
3God has blessed the people who obey his commands.
They always do what is right.
4 Lord, when you help your people,
please remember me!
Do not forget to help me,
when you come to rescue them.
5I want to enjoy the good things
that you give to the people that you have chosen.
I want to be happy together with them.
I want to join with the people who belong to you,
and praise you as you deserve.
6We have done bad things,
as our ancestors also did.
We have done things that are wicked and evil.
7When our ancestors were in Egypt,
they did not understand your miracles.
They forgot the many ways that you showed them your faithful love.
When they arrived at the Red Sea,
they turned against you, Lord.
8But the Lord rescued them,
to show that his name is great.
He showed that he was very powerful.
9He shouted at the Red Sea,
and it became dry.
He led his people through the middle of the deep water,
as if they walked in a desert!
10He rescued them from the people who hated them.
He saved them from their enemy's power.
11The water of the sea drowned their enemies,
so that none of them remained alive. #106:11 See Exodus 14.
12Then God's people believed his promises.
They sang songs to praise him. #106:12 They sang songs to praise God, but they soon forgot how God had saved them.
13But they soon forgot
what the Lord had done to help them.
They did not wait for him to tell them what to do.
14In the wilderness they wanted better food.
They tested God to see what he would do.
15He gave them the food that they asked for,
but he also sent a bad disease on them. #106:15 See Numbers 11:33-34.
16The people became jealous of Moses,
and Aaron, the Lord's special priest.
17So God made the earth break open,
so that Dathan fell into it.
It also destroyed Abiram and his people.
18Fire burned all their group,
and it killed those wicked people. #106:18 See Numbers 16:1-40.
19At Horeb, the Israelites used gold to make a cow,
and they worshipped it.
20They turned away from their great God.
Instead, they worshipped the statue of a cow,
an animal that eats grass! #106:20 See Exodus 32. Horeb is another name for Sinai mountain.
21They forgot the God who had saved them,
when he did great miracles in Egypt.
22He had done powerful things in the land of Ham's descendants,
and at the shore of the Red Sea.
His people forgot about all that!
23So God said that he would destroy them.
But God's servant, Moses, spoke on their behalf.
He asked God not to be angry with his people,
and God agreed.
24Later, they did not believe God's promise
to take them safely into the beautiful land of Canaan.
25They spoke against the Lord in their tents,
and they did not obey him.
26So he made a strong promise
that he would cause them to die in the desert.
27He promised that he would chase their descendants away,
so that they died in foreign countries. #106:27 See Numbers 13—14.
28After that, they started to worship the false god, Baal of Peor.
They ate the food from sacrifices
that people gave to dead idols.
29The Lord became angry
because of what his people did.
He sent a bad disease among them.
30Then Phinehas punished the guilty people,
so that the disease stopped killing people. #106:30 See Numbers 25:7-8.
31So we remember that Phinehas was a righteous man,
and that will be true for ever.
32At Meribah springs, the Israelites made God angry.
What they did there caused Moses to have trouble.
33Moses was so upset that he spoke in a careless way. #106:33 See Numbers 20:1-13.
34The Lord commanded his people
to destroy the nations of Canaan,
But they did not obey the Lord's command.
35Instead, they mixed with those nations
and they learned their way of life.
36They worshipped their idols
which caught them in a trap.
37They even killed their sons and their daughters
as sacrifices for those idols of demons!
38Their sons and their daughters did not deserve to die,
but they killed them as sacrifices for the idols of Canaan.
Those murders made the land unclean.
39The things that the Lord's people did
made them unclean.
They were not faithful to the Lord,
like a wife who is not faithful to her husband.
40So the Lord became angry with his people.
They belonged to him
but he turned away from them.
41He let other nations have power over them.
Their enemies ruled over them.
42Their enemies had power to hurt them,
and they were cruel to them.
43Many times, the Lord rescued his people,
but they had decided not to obey him.
Their sins made them weaker and weaker.
44But the Lord still saw when they were in trouble.
He answered them when they called to him for help.
45He remembered the covenant that he had made with them.
Because of his faithful love for his people,
he stopped punishing them.
46He caused all their enemies to be kind to them.
47 Lord, our God, please save us!
Bring us safely home from among the other nations. #106:47 The writer prays that God will take his people home to Judah from Babylon and other places.
Then we will thank you!
We will shout aloud to praise your holy name.
48 Praise the Lord, Israel's God,
as he deserves!
Praise him now and for ever!
Let everybody say, ‘Amen! We agree!’
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! #106:48 This verse shows the end of Book 4, Psalms 90-106.
