Psalms 106

PSALM 106
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1Give praise and thanks unto the Lord,
for bountiful is he;
His tender mercy doth endure
unto eternity.
2God's mighty works who can express?
or shew forth all his praise?
3Blessed are they that judgment keep,
and justly do always.
4Remember me, Lord, with that love
which thou to thine dost bear;
With thy salvation, O my God,
to visit me draw near:
5That I thy chosen's good may see,
and in their joy rejoice;
And may with thine inheritance
triumph with cheerful voice.
6We with our fathers sinned have,
and of iniquity
Too long we have the workers been;
we have done wickedly.
7The wonders great, which thou, O Lord,
didst work in Egypt land,
Our fathers, though they saw, yet them
they did not understand:
And they thy mercies' multitude
kept not in memory;
But at the sea, ev'n the Red sea,
provok'd him grievously.
8Nevertheless he saved them,
ev'n for his own name's sake;
That so he might to be well known
his mighty power make.
9When he the Red sea did rebuke,
then dried up it was:
Through depths, as through the wilderness,
he safely made them pass.
10From hands of those that hated them
he did his people save;
And from the en'my's cruel hand
to them redemption gave.
11The waters overwhelm'd their foes;
not one was left alive.
12Then they believ'd his word,
and praise to him in songs did give.
13But soon did they his mighty works
forget unthankfully,
And on his counsel and his will
did not wait patiently;
14But much did lust in wilderness,
and God in desert tempt.
15He gave them what they sought, but to
their soul he leanness sent.
16And against Moses in the camp
their envy did appear;
At Aaron they, the saint of God,
envious also were.
17Therefore the earth did open wide,
and Dathan did devour,
And all Abiram's company
did cover in that hour.
18Likewise among their company
a fire was kindled then;
And so the hot consuming flame
burnt up these wicked men.
19Upon the hill of Horeb they
an idol-calf did frame,
A molten image they did make,
and worshipped the same.
20And thus their glory, and their God,
most vainly changed they
Into the likeness of an ox
that eateth grass or hay.
21They did forget the mighty God,
that had their saviour been,
By whom such great things brought to pass
they had in Egypt seen.
22In Ham's land he did wondrous works,
things terrible did he,
When he his mighty hand and arm
stretch'd out at the Red sea.
23Then said he, He would them destroy,
had not, his wrath to stay,
His chosen Moses stood in breach,
that them he should not slay.
24Yea, they despis'd the pleasant land,
believed not his word:
25But in their tents they murmured,
not heark'ning to the Lord.
26Therefore in desert them to slay
he lifted up his hand:
27'Mong nations to o'erthrow their seed,
and scatter in each land.
28They unto Baal-peor did
themselves associate;
The sacrifices of the dead
they did profanely eat.
29Thus, by their lewd inventions,
they did provoke his ire;
And then upon them suddenly
the plague brake in as fire.
30Then Phin'has rose, and justice did,
and so the plague did cease;
31That to all ages counted was
to him for righteousness.
32And at the waters, where they strove,
they did him angry make,
In such sort, that it fared ill
with Moses for their sake:
33Because they there his spirit meek
provoked bitterly,
So that he utter'd with his lips
words unadvisedly.
34Nor, as the Lord commanded them,
did they the nations slay:
35But with the heathen mingled were,
and learn'd of them their way.
36And they their idols serv'd, which did
a snare unto them turn.
37Their sons and daughters they to dev'ls
in sacrifice did burn.
38In their own children's guiltless blood
their hands they did imbrue,
Whom to Canaan's idols they
for sacrifices slew:
So was the land defil'd with blood.
39They stain'd with their own way,
And with their own inventions
a whoring they did stray.
40Against his people kindled was
the wrath of God therefore,
Insomuch that he did his own
inheritance abhor.
41He gave them to the heathen's hand;
their foes did them command.
42Their en'mies them oppress'd, they were
made subject to their hand.
43He many times deliver'd them;
but with their counsel so
They him provok'd, that for their sin
they were brought very low.
44Yet their affliction he beheld,
when he did hear their cry:
45And he for them his covenant
did call to memory;
After his mercies' multitude
46he did repent: And made
Them to be pity'd of all those
who did them captive lead.
47O Lord our God, us save,
and gather the heathen from among,
That we thy holy name may praise
in a triumphant song.
48Bless'd be JEHOVAH, Isr'el's God,
to all eternity:
Let all the people say, Amen.
Praise to the Lord give ye.

Psalm 106
Israel’s Rebelliousness and the Lord’s Help.
1 # 106:1 Or Hallelujah! Praise #106:1 Heb Yahthe Lord!
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His mercy is everlasting.
2Who can speak of the mighty deeds of the Lord,
Or can proclaim all His praise?
3How blessed are those who maintain #106:3 Or judgmentjustice,
# 106:3 Many Heb mss The one who performs Who practice righteousness at all times!
4¶Remember me, Lord, in Your favor #106:4 Lit oftoward Your people.
Visit me with Your salvation,
5So that I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones,
That I may rejoice in the joy of Your nation,
That I may boast with Your #106:5 I.e., peopleinheritance.
6¶We have sinned #106:6 Lit withlike our fathers,
We have gone astray, we have behaved wickedly.
7Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your #106:7 I.e., wonderful actswonders;
They did not remember #106:7 Lit the multitude of Your kindnessesYour abundant kindnesses,
But rebelled by the sea, at the #106:7 Lit Sea of ReedsRed Sea.
8Nevertheless He saved them for the sake of His name,
So that He might make His power known.
9So He rebuked the #106:9 Lit Sea of ReedsRed Sea and it dried up,
And He led them through the mighty waters, as through the wilderness.
10So He saved them from the #106:10 Or powerhand of one who hated them,
And redeemed them from the #106:10 Or powerhand of the enemy.
11The waters covered their adversaries;
Not one of them was left.
12Then they believed His words;
They sang His praise.
13¶They quickly forgot His works;
They did not wait for His plan,
14But became lustfully greedy in the wilderness,
And put God to the test in the desert.
15So He gave them their request,
But sent a #106:15 Or leanness into their soulwasting disease among them.
16¶When they became envious of Moses in the camp,
And of Aaron, the holy one of the Lord,
17The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
And engulfed the #106:17 Or assembly, bandcompany of Abiram.
18And a fire blazed up in their #106:18 Or assembly, bandcompany;
The flame consumed the wicked.
19¶They made a calf in Horeb,
And worshiped a cast metal image.
20So they exchanged their glory
For the image of an ox that eats grass.
21They forgot God their Savior,
Who had done great things in Egypt,
22 # 106:22 I.e., Wonderful acts Wonders in the land of Ham,
And awesome things by the #106:22 Lit Sea of ReedsRed Sea.
23Therefore He said that He would destroy them,
If Moses, His chosen one, had not stood in the gap before Him,
To turn away His wrath from destroying them.
24Then they rejected the pleasant land;
They did not believe His word,
25But grumbled in their tents;
They did not listen to the voice of the Lord.
26Therefore He #106:26 Lit lifted up His handswore to them
That He would have them fall in the wilderness,
27And that He would bring down their #106:27 Lit seeddescendants among the nations,
And scatter them in the lands.
28¶They also followed #106:28 Or Baal of PeorBaal-peor,
And ate sacrifices offered to the dead.
29So they provoked Him to anger with their deeds,
And a plague broke out among them.
30Then Phinehas stood up and #106:30 Or pronounced judgmentintervened,
And so the plague was brought to a halt.
31And it was credited to him as righteousness,
To all generations forever.
32¶They also provoked Him to wrath at the waters of #106:32 Lit strifeMeribah,
So that it went badly for Moses on their account.
33Because they were rebellious against #106:33 Or his spiritHis Spirit,
He spoke rashly with his lips.
34¶They did not destroy the peoples,
As the Lord had commanded them,
35But they got involved with the nations
And learned their #106:35 Lit workspractices,
36And served their idols,
Which became a snare to them.
37They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons,
38And shed innocent blood,
The blood of their sons and their daughters
Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan;
And the land was defiled with the blood.
39So they became unclean in their #106:39 Lit workspractices,
And #106:39 Or prostituted themselveswere unfaithful in their deeds.
40¶Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against His people,
And He loathed His #106:40 I.e., peopleinheritance.
41So He handed them over to the #106:41 Or Gentilesnations,
And those who hated them ruled over them.
42Their enemies also oppressed them,
And they were subdued under their #106:42 Lit handpower.
43Many times He would rescue them;
They, however, were rebellious in their plan,
And they sank down into their guilt.
44¶Nevertheless He looked at their distress
When He heard their cry;
45And He remembered His covenant for their sake,
And #106:45 Lit was sorryrelented according to the greatness of His mercy.
46He also made them objects of compassion
In the presence of all their captors.
47¶Save us, Lord our God,
And gather us from the nations,
To give thanks to Your holy name
And glory in Your praise.
48Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
From everlasting to everlasting.
And all the people shall say, “Amen.”
