Psalms 105
105
PSALM 105
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1Give thanks to God, call on his name;
to men his deeds make known.
2Sing ye to him, sing psalms; proclaim
his wondrous works each one.
3See that ye in his holy name
to glory do accord;
And let the heart of ev'ry one
rejoice that seeks the Lord.
4The Lord Almighty, and his strength,
with stedfast hearts seek ye:
His blessed and his gracious face
seek ye continually.
5Think on the works that he hath done,
which admiration breed;
His wonders, and the judgments all
which from his mouth proceed;
6O ye that are of Abr'ham's race,
his servant well approv'n;
And ye that Jacob's children are,
whom he chose for his own.
7Because he, and he only, is
the mighty Lord our God;
And his most righteous judgments are
in all the earth abroad.
8His cov'nant he remember'd hath,
that it may ever stand:
To thousand generations
the word he did command.
9Which covenant he firmly made
with faithful Abraham,
And unto Isaac, by his oath,
he did renew the same:
10And unto Jacob, for a law,
he made it firm and sure,
A covenant to Israel,
which ever should endure.
11He said, I'll give Canaan's land
for heritage to you;
12While they were strangers there,
and few, in number very few:
13While yet they went from land to land
without a sure abode;
And while through sundry kingdoms they
did wander far abroad;
14Yet, notwithstanding suffer'd he
no man to do them wrong:
Yea, for their sakes, he did reprove
kings, who were great and strong.
15Thus did he say, Touch ye not those
that mine anointed be,
Nor do the prophets any harm
that do pertain to me.
16He call'd for famine on the land,
he brake the staff of bread:
17But yet he sent a man before,
by whom they should be fed;
Ev'n Joseph, whom unnat'rally
sell for a slave did they;
18Whose feet with fetters they did hurt,
and he in irons lay;
19Until the time that his word came
to give him liberty;
The word and purpose of the Lord
did him in prison try.
20Then sent the king, and did command
that he enlarg'd should be:
He that the people's ruler was
did send to set him free.
21A lord to rule his family
he rais'd him, as most fit;
To him of all that he possess'd
he did the charge commit:
22That he might at his pleasure bind
the princes of the land;
And he might teach his senators
wisdom to understand.
23The people then of Israel
down into Egypt came;
And Jacob also sojourned
within the land of Ham.
24And he did greatly by his pow'r
increase his people there;
And stronger than their enemies
they by his blessing were.
25Their heart he turned to envy
his folk maliciously,
With those that his own servants were
to deal in subtilty.
26His servant Moses he did send,
Aaron his chosen one.
27By these his signs and wonders great
in Ham's land were made known.
28Darkness he sent, and made it dark;
his word they did obey.
29He turn'd their waters into blood,
and he their fish did slay.
30The land in plenty brought forth frogs
in chambers of their kings.
31His word all sorts of flies and lice
in all their borders brings.
32He hail for rain, and flaming fire
into their land he sent:
33And he their vines and fig-trees smote:
trees of their coasts he rent.
34He spake, and caterpillars came,
locusts did much abound;
35Which in their land all herbs consum'd,
and all fruits of their ground.
36He smote all first-born in their land,
chief of their strength each one.
37With gold and silver brought them forth,
weak in their tribes were none.
38Egypt was glad when forth they went,
their fear on them did light.
39He spread a cloud for covering,
and fire to shine by night.
40They ask'd, and he brought quails:
with bread of heav'n he filled them.
41He open'd rocks, floods gush'd,
and ran in deserts like a stream.
42For on his holy promise he,
and servant Abr'ham, thought.
43With joy his people, his elect
with gladness, forth he brought.
44And unto them the pleasant lands
he of the heathen gave;
That of the people's labour they
inheritance might have.
45That they his statutes might observe
according to his word;
And that they might his laws obey.
Give praise unto the Lord.

4Seek the Lord and his #See Ps. 78:61 strength;

5Remember the #Ps. 77:11; See Ps. 72:18 wondrous works that he has done,
his miracles, and #Ex. 6:6; 7:4the judgments he uttered,
6O offspring of #ver. 42 Abraham, his servant,
children of Jacob, his #ver. 43; Ps. 106:5; [Ps. 135:4]chosen ones!
7He is the Lord our God;
his #Isa. 26:9judgments are in all the earth.
8He #ver. 42; Ps. 106:45; 111:5; Luke 1:72 remembers his covenant forever,
the word that he commanded, for #Deut. 7:9a thousand generations,
9 #
Gen. 17:2; See Gen. 22:15-18 the covenant that he made with Abraham,
his #Gen. 26:3sworn promise to Isaac,
10which he confirmed to #Gen. 28:13, 14; 35:11, 12Jacob as a statute,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
11saying, #Gen. 13:15; 15:18 “To you I will give the land of Canaan
as #Ps. 78:55your portion for an inheritance.”
12When they were #Gen. 34:30; Deut. 7:7; 26:5 few in number,
of little account, and #Heb. 11:9sojourners in it,
13wandering from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another people,
14he #[Gen. 35:5] allowed no one to oppress them;
he #Gen. 12:17; 20:3rebuked kings on their account,
15saying, #Gen. 20:6, 7; [Gen. 26:11]“Touch not my anointed ones,
do my prophets no harm!”
16When he #Gen. 41:54; [2 Kgs. 8:1; Hag. 1:11] summoned a famine on the land
and #Lev. 26:26; Isa. 3:1; Ezek. 4:16; [Ps. 104:15]broke all supply#105:16 Hebrew staff of bread,
17he had #Gen. 45:5; 50:20 sent a man ahead of them,
Joseph, who was #Gen. 37:28, 36; Acts 7:9sold as a slave.
18His #[Gen. 39:20]feet were hurt with fetters;
his neck was put in a collar of iron;
19until #Gen. 40:20, 21; 41:53, 54 what he had said came to pass,
the word of the Lord #[Judg. 7:4]tested him.
20 #
Gen. 41:14 The king sent and #Ps. 146:7released him;
the ruler of the peoples set him free;
21he #Gen. 41:40made him lord of his house
and ruler of all his possessions,
22to bind#105:22 Septuagint, Syriac, Jerome instruct his princes at his pleasure
and to teach his elders wisdom.
23Then #Gen. 46:6; Acts 7:15 Israel came to Egypt;
Jacob #Acts 13:17 sojourned in #Ps. 106:22; [Ps. 78:51]the land of Ham.
24And the Lord #Ex. 1:7; Deut. 26:5made his people very fruitful
and made them stronger than their foes.
25He #[Ex. 9:12; Rom. 11:8]; See Ex. 1:8-14 turned their hearts to hate his people,
to #Ex. 1:10; Acts 7:19deal craftily with his servants.
26He #Ex. 3:10; 4:12 sent Moses, his servant,
and Aaron, #Num. 16:5; 17:5whom he had chosen.
27 # For ver. 27-36, see Ps. 78:43-51 They performed his signs among them
and miracles in #[See ver. 23 above]the land of Ham.
28He #Ex. 10:21-23 sent darkness, and made the land dark;
they #Ps. 99:7did not rebel#105:28 Septuagint, Syriac omit not against his words.
29He turned their waters into blood
and #Ex. 7:21caused their fish to die.
30Their land swarmed with frogs,
even in #Ex. 8:3the chambers of their kings.
31He spoke, and there came #Ex. 8:21 swarms of flies,
#
Ex. 8:16
and gnats throughout their country.
32He gave them hail for rain,
and fiery #Ex. 9:23lightning bolts through their land.
33He struck down their vines and fig trees,
and #Ex. 9:25shattered the trees of their country.
34He spoke, and the #See Ex. 10:12-15locusts came,
young locusts without number,
35which devoured all the vegetation in their land
and ate up the fruit of their ground.
36He #See Ps. 78:51struck down all the firstborn in their land,
# See Ps. 78:51 the firstfruits of all their strength.
37Then he brought out Israel with #Ex. 12:35, 36silver and gold,
and there was none among his tribes who stumbled.
38 #
Ex. 12:23 Egypt was glad when they departed,
for #Ex. 15:16dread of them had fallen upon it.
39He #[Job 36:20; Isa. 4:5]; See Ex. 13:21spread a cloud for a covering,
and fire to give light by night.
40 #
Ps. 78:18, 27 They asked, and he #Ex. 16:13 brought quail,
and gave them #Ps. 78:24, 25; [John 6:31]bread from heaven in abundance.
41He opened the rock, and #See Ps. 78:15 water gushed out;
it flowed through #See Ps. 63:1the desert like a river.
42For he #ver. 8, 9; Ex. 2:24 remembered his holy promise,
and #[Gen. 15:14]; See ver. 6Abraham, his servant.
43So he brought his people out with joy,
his #[See ver. 42 above] chosen ones with #[Isa. 35:10]; See Ex. 15:1-21singing.
44And he #Josh. 24:13; [Ps. 78:55]gave them the lands of the nations,
and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples’ toil,
45that they might #Deut. 4:1, 40 keep his statutes
and #Ps. 78:7 observe his laws.
# See Ps. 104:35 Praise the Lord!
