PSALM 10
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1Wherefore is it that thou, O Lord,
dost stand from us afar?
And wherefore hidest thou thyself,
when times so troublous are?
2The wicked in his loftiness
doth persecute the poor:
In these devices they have fram'd
let them be taken sure.
3The wicked of his heart's desire
doth talk with boasting great;
He blesseth him that's covetous,
whom yet the Lord doth hate.
4The wicked, through his pride of face,
on God he doth not call;
And in the counsels of his heart
the Lord is not at all.
5His ways they always grievous are;
thy judgments from his sight
Removed are: at all his foes
he puffeth with despight.
6Within his heart he thus hath said,
I shall not moved be;
And no adversity at all
shall ever come to me.
7His mouth with cursing, fraud, deceit,
is fill'd abundantly;
And underneath his tongue there is
mischief and vanity.
8He closely sits in villages;
he slays the innocent:
Against the poor that pass him by
his cruel eyes are bent.
9He, lion-like, lurks in his den;
he waits the poor to take;
And when he draws him in his net,
his prey he doth him make.
10Himself he humbleth very low,
he croucheth down withal,
That so a multitude of poor
may by his strong ones fall.
11He thus hath said within his heart,
The Lord hath quite forgot;
He hides his countenance, and he
for ever sees it not.
12O Lord, do thou arise; O God,
lift up thine hand on high:
Put not the meek afflicted ones
out of thy memory.
13Why is it that the wicked man
thus doth the Lord despise?
Because that God will it require
he in his heart denies.
14Thou hast it seen; for their mischief
and spite thou wilt repay:
The poor commits himself to thee;
thou art the orphan's stay.
15The arm break of the wicked man,
and of the evil one;
Do thou seek out his wickedness,
until thou findest none.
16The Lord is King through ages all,
ev'n to eternity;
The heathen people from his land
are perish'd utterly.
17O Lord, of those that humble are
thou the desire didst hear;
Thou wilt prepare their heart, and thou
to hear wilt bend thine ear;
18To judge the fatherless, and those
that are oppressed sore;
That man, that is but sprung of earth,
may them oppress no more.

Psalms 10
10
I
1Why, Lord, do you stand afar
and pay no heed in times of trouble?
2Arrogant scoundrels pursue the poor;
they trap them by their cunning schemes.#Is 32:7.
II
3The wicked even boast of their greed;
these robbers curse and scorn the Lord.#Ps 36:2.
4In their insolence the wicked boast:
“God does not care; there is no God.”#Ps 14:1; Jb 22:13; Is 29:15; Jer 5:12; Zep 1:12.
5Yet their affairs always succeed;
they ignore your judgment on high;
they sneer at all who oppose them.
6They say in their hearts, “We will never fall;
never will we see misfortune.”
7Their mouths are full of oaths, violence, and lies;
discord and evil are under their tongues.#Is 32:7; Rom 3:14.
8They wait in ambush near towns;
their eyes watch for the helpless
to murder the innocent in secret.#Ps 11:2; Jb 24:14.
9They lurk in ambush like lions in a thicket,
hide there to trap the poor,
snare them and close the net.#Ps 17:12; Prv 1:11; Jer 5:26.
10The helpless are crushed, laid low;
they fall into the power of the wicked,
11Who say in their hearts, “God has forgotten,
shows no concern, never bothers to look.”#Ps 44:25; 64:6; 73:11; 94:7; Ez 9:9.
III
12Rise up, Lord! God, lift up your hand!
Do not forget the poor!
13Why should the wicked scorn God,
say in their hearts, “God does not care”?
14But you do see;
you take note of misery and sorrow;#Ps 31:8; 56:9; 2 Kgs 20:5; Is 25:8; Rev 7:17.
you take the matter in hand.
To you the helpless can entrust their cause;
you are the defender of orphans.#Ex 22:21–22.
15Break the arm of the wicked and depraved;
make them account for their crimes;
let none of them survive.
IV
16The Lord is king forever;#Ps 145:13; Jer 10:10.
the nations have vanished from his land.
17You listen, Lord, to the needs of the poor;
you strengthen their heart and incline your ear.
18You win justice for the orphaned and oppressed;#Dt 10:18.
no one on earth will cause terror again.
