The Family History of Jesus
1This is the family history of Jesus Christ. He came from the family of David. David came from the family of Abraham.
2Abraham was the father# “Father” in Jewish lists of ancestors can sometimes mean grandfather or more distant relative. of Isaac.
Isaac was the father of Jacob.
Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.
3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah.
Perez was the father of Hezron.
Hezron was the father of Ram.
4Ram was the father of Amminadab.

5Salmon was the father of Boaz.

6Jesse was the father of King David.
David was the father of Solomon.
7Solomon was the father of Rehoboam.
Rehoboam was the father of Abijah.
Abijah was the father of Asa.# Some Greek copies read “Asaph,” another name for Asa (see 1 Chronicles 3:10).
8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat.
Jehoshaphat was the father of Jehoram.
Jehoram was the ancestor of Uzziah.
9Uzziah was the father of Jotham.
Jotham was the father of Ahaz.
Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.
10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh.
Manasseh was the father of Amon.
Amon was the father of Josiah.
11Josiah was the grandfather of Jehoiachin# The Greek reads “Jeconiah,” another name for Jehoiachin (see 2 Kings 24:6 and 1 Chronicles 3:16). and his brothers.
12After they were taken to Babylon:

Joseph was the husband of Mary,
and Mary was the mother of Jesus.
Jesus is called the Christ.
17So there were 14 generations from Abraham to David. And there were 14 generations from David until the time when the people were taken to Babylon. And there were 14 generations from the time when the people were taken to Babylon until Christ was born.
The Birth of Jesus Christ
18The mother of Jesus Christ was Mary. And this is how the birth of Jesus came about. Mary was engaged to marry Joseph. But before they married, she learned that she was going to have a baby. She was pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit. 19Mary’s husband, Joseph, was a good man. He did not want to disgrace her in public, so he planned to divorce her secretly.
20While Joseph thought about this, an angel of the Lord came to him in a dream. The angel said, “Joseph, descendant of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife. The baby in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son. You will name the son Jesus.# The name Jesus means “salvation.” Give him that name because he will save his people from their sins.”
22All this happened to make clear the full meaning of what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23“The virgin will be pregnant. She will have a son, and they will name him Immanuel.”# Quotation from Isaiah 7:14. This name means “God is with us.”
24When Joseph woke up, he did what the Lord’s angel had told him to do. Joseph married Mary. 25But he did not have intimate relations with her until she gave birth to the son. And Joseph named the son Jesus.

The Ancestors of Jesus
(Luke 3.23-38)
1Jesus Christ came from the family of King David and also from the family of Abraham. And this is a list of his ancestors. 2-6aFrom Abraham to King David, his ancestors were:
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah and his brothers (Judah's sons were Perez and Zerah, and their mother was Tamar), Hezron;
Ram, Amminadab, Nahshon, Salmon, Boaz (his mother was Rahab), Obed (his mother was Ruth), Jesse, and King David.
6b-11 #
2 K 24.14,15; 2 Ch 36.10; Jr 27.19-21. From David to the time of the exile in Babylonia, the ancestors of Jesus were:
David, Solomon (his mother had been Uriah's wife), Rehoboam, Abijah, Asa, Jehoshaphat, Jehoram;
Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah, and Jehoiachin and his brothers.
12-16From the exile to the birth of Jesus, his ancestors were:
Jehoiachin, Shealtiel, Zerubbabel, Abiud, Eliakim, Azor, Zadok, Achim;
Eliud, Eleazar, Matthan, Jacob, and Joseph, the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who is called the Messiah.
17There were 14 generations from Abraham to David. There were also 14 from David to the exile in Babylonia and 14 more to the birth of the Messiah.
The Birth of Jesus
(Luke 2.1-7)
18 #
Lk 1.27. This is how Jesus Christ was born. A young woman named Mary was engaged to Joseph from King David's family. But before they were married, she learned that she was going to have a baby by God's Holy Spirit. 19Joseph was a good man#1.19 good man: Or “kind man,” or “man who always did the right thing.” and did not want to embarrass Mary in front of everyone. So he decided to quietly call off the wedding.
20While Joseph was thinking about this, an angel from the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel said, “Joseph, the baby that Mary will have is from the Holy Spirit. Go ahead and marry her. 21#Si 46.1; Lk 1.31. Then after her baby is born, name him Jesus,#1.21 name him Jesus: In Hebrew the name “Jesus” means “the Lord saves.” because he will save his people from their sins.”
22So the Lord's promise came true, just as the prophet had said, 23#Is 7.14 (LXX). “A virgin will have a baby boy, and he will be called Immanuel,” which means “God is with us.”
24After Joseph woke up, he and Mary were soon married, just as the Lord's angel had told him to do. 25#Lk 2.21. But they did not sleep together before her baby was born. Then Joseph named him Jesus.
