Isaiah 11
11
The King of Peace Is Coming
1A branch will grow
from a stump of a tree that was cut down.
So a new king will come
from the family of Jesse.# King David’s father.
2The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon that king.
The Spirit gives him wisdom, understanding, guidance and power.
And the Spirit teaches him to know and respect the Lord.
3This king will be glad to obey the Lord.
He will not judge by the way things look.
He will not judge by what people say.
4He will judge the poor honestly.
He will be fair in his decisions for the poor people of the land.
At his command evil people will be punished.
By his words the wicked will be put to death.
5Goodness and fairness will give him strength.
They will be like a belt around his waist.
6Then wolves will live in peace with lambs.
And leopards will lie down to rest with goats.
Calves, lions and young bulls will eat together.
And a little child will lead them.
7Cows and bears will eat together in peace.
Their young will lie down together.
Lions will eat hay as oxen do.
8A baby will be able to play near a cobra’s hole.
A child will be able to put his hand into the nest of a poisonous snake.
9They will not hurt or destroy each other
on all my holy mountain.
The earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord,
as the sea is full of water.
10At that time the new king from the family of Jesse will stand as a banner for the people. The nations will come together around him. And the place where he lives will be filled with glory. 11At that time the Lord will again reach out and take his people who are left alive. These are God’s people who are left alive in Assyria, North Egypt, South Egypt, Cush, Elam, Babylonia, Hamath and all the islands of the sea.
12God will raise a banner as a sign for all people.
He will gather the people of Israel who were forced from their country.
He will gather the scattered people of Judah
from all parts of the earth.
13At that time Israel will not be jealous anymore.
Judah will have no enemies left.
Israel will not be jealous of Judah.
And Judah will not hate Israel.
14But Israel and Judah will attack the Philistines on the west.
Together they will take the riches from the people of the east.
They will conquer Edom and Moab.
And the people of Ammon will be under their control.
15The Lord will dry up
the Red Sea of Egypt.
He will wave his arm over the Euphrates River.
He will dry it up with a scorching wind.
He will divide it into seven small rivers.
And people will be able to walk across them with their sandals on.
16So God’s people who are left alive
will have a way to leave Assyria.
It will be like the time the Israelites
went out of Egypt.

Isaiah 11
11
The Branch’s Righteous Reign
1And a shoot will come out from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from its roots will bear fruit.
2And the spirit of Yahweh shall rest on him—
a spirit of wisdom and understanding,
a spirit of counsel and might,
a spirit of knowledge and the fear of Yahweh.
3And his breath#Hebrew “smelling,” perhaps metaphorically as “delight” as in Amos 5:14; perhaps this line was accidentally copied twice from the preceding line is in the fear of Yahweh.
And he shall judge not by his eyesight,
and he shall rebuke not by what he hears with#Literally “the rumors of” his ears.
4But he shall judge the poor with righteousness,
and he shall decide for the needy of the earth with rectitude.
And he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and he shall kill the wicked person with the breath of his lips.
5And righteousness shall be the belt around his waist,
and faithfulness the belt around his loins.
6And a wolf shall stay#Literally “dwell as an alien” with a lamb,
and a leopard shall lie down with a kid,
and a calf and a lion and a fatling together
as a small boy leads#Literally “and a small boy leading” them.
7And a cow and a bear shall graze;
their young shall lie down together.
And a lion shall eat straw like the cattle.
8And an infant#Literally “one nursing” shall play over a serpent’s hole,
and a toddler#Literally “one who is weaned” shall put his hand on a viper’s hole.
9They will not injure and they will not destroy on all of my holy mountain,#Literally “mountain of holiness”
for the earth will be full of the knowledge of Yahweh,
as the waters cover the sea.
10And this shall happen on that day:
the nations shall inquire of the root of Jesse,
which shall be standing as a signal to the peoples,
and his resting place shall be glorious.
The Regathered Remnant
11And this shall happen on that day:
The Lord will again extend his hand a second time
to acquire the remnant of his people that is left,
from Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, and the coastlands of the sea,
12and he will raise a signal for the nations.
And he will gather the outcasts of Israel,
and he will gather the scattered ones of Judah together from the four corners#Literally “wings” of the earth.
13And the jealousy of Ephraim shall depart,
and the enemies of Judah shall be cut off.
Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah,
and Judah shall not be an enemy of Ephraim.
14But they shall swoop#Literally “fly” upon the Philistine shoulder,#That is, the hill country west of Judah westward.#Literally “sea”
Together they shall plunder the sons of the east.
Edom and Moab will be under their command,#Literally “the stretching of their hand”
and the sons of Ammon will be their subjugated people.
15And Yahweh will divide#Or “utterly destroy” the tongue#Probably the “gulf” of the sea of Egypt,#That is, the Red Sea
and he will wave his hand over the river#That is, the Euphrates River with his scorching wind;
and he will strike it into seven streams,
and he will make it passable by foot.#Literally “cause to walk with the sandal”
16So there shall be a highway from Assyria for the remnant of his people that remains,
as there was for Israel when#Literally “in the day” it went up from the land of Egypt.
