Genesis 48

Blessings for Manasseh and Ephraim
1Some time later Joseph learned that his father was very sick. So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim and went to his father. 2When Joseph arrived, someone told Jacob, also called Israel, āYour son Joseph has come to see you.ā Jacob was weak. So he used all his strength and sat up on his bed.
3Then Jacob said to Joseph, āGod All-Powerful appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan. God blessed me there. 4He said to me, āI will give you many children. I will make you the father of many peoples. And I will give your descendants this land forever.ā 5Your two sons were born here in Egypt before I came. They will be counted as my own sons. Ephraim and Manasseh will be my sons just as Reuben and Simeon are my sons. 6But if you have other children, they will be your own. But their land will be part of the land given to Ephraim and Manasseh. 7When I came from Northwest Mesopotamia, Rachel died in the land of Canaan. We were traveling toward Ephrath. This made me very sad. I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath.ā (Today Ephrath is Bethlehem.)
8Then Israel saw Josephās sons. He said, āWho are these boys?ā
9Joseph said to his father, āThey are my sons. God has given them to me here in Egypt.ā
Israel said, āBring your sons to me so I may bless them.ā
10At this time Israelās eyesight was bad because he was old. So Joseph brought the boys close to him. Israel kissed the boys and put his arms around them. 11He said to Joseph, āI thought I would never see you alive again. And now God has let me see you and also your children.ā 12Then Joseph moved his sons off Israelās lap. Joseph bowed facedown to the ground. 13He put Ephraim on his right side and Manasseh on his left. (So Ephraim was near Israelās left hand, and Manasseh was near Israelās right hand.) Joseph brought the boys close to Israel. 14But Israel crossed his arms. He put his right hand on the head of Ephraim, who was younger. He put his left hand on the head of Manasseh. But he was the firstborn son. 15And Israel blessed Joseph and said,
āMy ancestors Abraham and Isaac served our God.
And like a shepherd God has led me all my life.
16He was the Angel who saved me from all my troubles.
Now I pray that he will bless these boys.
May my name be known through these boys.
And may the names of my ancestors Abraham and Isaac be known through them.
May they have many descendants on the earth.ā
17Joseph saw that his father put his right hand on Ephraimās head. Joseph didnāt like it. So he took hold of his fatherās hand. He wanted to move it from Ephraimās head to Manassehās head. 18Joseph said to his father, āYou are doing it wrong, Father. Manasseh is the firstborn son. Put your right hand on his head.ā
19But his father refused and said, āI know, my son, I know. Manasseh will be great and have many descendants. But his younger brother will be greater. And his descendants will be enough to make a nation.ā
20So Israel blessed them that day. He said,
āWhen a blessing is given in Israel, they will say:
āMay God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.āā
In this way he made Ephraim greater than Manasseh.
21Then Israel said to Joseph, āLook at me. I am about to die. But God will be with you. He will take you back to the land of your fathers. 22I have given you something that I did not give your brothers. I have given you the land of Shechem that I took from the Amorite people. I took it with my sword and my bow.ā

Genesis 48
48
1#Jacob continues his preparations for death. In a scene that evokes the nearly blind Isaac blessing Jacob and Esau (chap. 27), Jacob blesses Josephās two sons. He adopts them, elevating them to a status equal to that of Jacobās first sons Reuben and Simeon (cf. 1 Chr 5:1). The adoption is one more instance of Jacobās favoring Rachel and those born of her. The mention of Jacobās failing eyesight and his selection of the younger son over the older evokes the great deathbed scene in chap. 27. He reaffirms to Joseph the ancient divine promise of progeny and land. Some time afterward, Joseph was informed, āYour father is failing.ā So he took along with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. 2When Jacob was told, āYour son Joseph has come to you,ā Israel rallied his strength and sat up in bed.
3#Gn 28:12ā15; 35:6. Jacob then said to Joseph: āGod Almighty appeared to me at Luz#Luz: an older name of Bethel (28:19). in the land of Canaan, and blessing me, 4he said, āI will make you fertile and multiply you and make you into an assembly of peoples, and I will give this land to your descendants after you as a permanent possession.ā 5So now your two sons who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I joined you here, shall be mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine as much as Reuben and Simeon are mine. 6Progeny born to you after them shall remain yours; but their heritage shall be recorded in the names of their brothers. 7#Gn 35:19. I do this because, when I was returning from Paddan, your mother Rachel died, to my sorrow, during the journey in Canaan, while we were still a short distance from Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath [now Bethlehem].ā#Since her early death prevented Rachel from bearing more than two sons, Jacob feels justified in treating her two grandsons as if they were her own offspring.
8When Israel saw Josephās sons, he asked, āWho are these?ā 9āThey are my sons,ā Joseph answered his father, āwhom God has given me here.ā āBring them to me,ā said his father, āthat I may bless them.ā 10Now Israelās eyes were dim from age; he could not see well. When Joseph brought his sons close to him, he kissed and embraced them. 11Then Israel said to Joseph, āI never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your descendants as well!ā
12Joseph removed them from his fatherās knees and bowed down before him with his face to the ground. 13Then Joseph took the two, Ephraim with his right hand, to Israelās left, and Manasseh with his left hand, to Israelās right, and brought them up to him. 14But Israel, crossing his hands, put out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, although he was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, although he was the firstborn. 15Then he blessed them with these words:
āMay the God in whose presence
my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
The God who has been my shepherd
from my birth to this day,#Heb 11:21.
16The angel who has delivered me from all harm,
bless these boys
That in them my name be recalled,
and the names of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac,
And they may become teeming multitudes
upon the earth!ā
17When Joseph saw that his father had laid his right hand on Ephraimās head, this seemed wrong to him; so he took hold of his fatherās hand, to remove it from Ephraimās head to Manassehās, 18saying, āThat is not right, father; the other one is the firstborn; lay your right hand on his head!ā 19But his father refused. āI know it, son,ā he said, āI know. That one too shall become a people, and he too shall be great. Nevertheless, his younger brother shall surpass him, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.ā 20So he blessed them that day and said, āBy you shall the people of Israel pronounce blessings, saying, āGod make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.āā Thus he placed Ephraim before Manasseh.#Heb 11:21.
21Then Israel said to Joseph: āI am about to die. But God will be with you and will restore you to the land of your ancestors. 22#Jos 17:14, 17ā18; Jn 4:5. As for me, I give to you, as to the one above his brothers, Shechem, which I captured from the Amorites with my sword and bow.ā#Both the meaning of the Hebrew and the historical reference in this verse are obscure. By taking the Hebrew word for Shechem as a common noun meaning shoulder or mountain slope, some translators render the verse, āI give you one portion more than your brothers, which I capturedā¦ā The reference may be to the capture of Shechem by the sons of Jacob (34:24ā29). Shechem lay near the border separating the tribal territory of Manasseh from that of Ephraim (Jos 16:4ā9; 17:1ā2, 7).
