Genesis 46
46
Jacob Goes to Egypt
1So Jacob, also called Israel, took all he had and started his trip. He went to Beersheba. There he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. 2During the night God spoke to Israel in a vision. He said, āJacob, Jacob.ā
And Jacob answered, āHere I am.ā
3Then God said, āI am God, the God of your father. Donāt be afraid to go to Egypt. I will make your descendants a great nation there. 4I will go to Egypt with you. And I will bring you out of Egypt again. Josephās own hands will close your eyes when you die.ā
5Then Jacob left Beersheba. The sons of Israel loaded their father, their children and their wives. They put them in the wagons the king of Egypt had sent. 6They also took their farm animals and everything they had gotten in Canaan. So Jacob went to Egypt with all his descendants. 7He took his sons and grandsons, his daughters and granddaughters. He took all his family to Egypt with him.
Jacobās Family
8Now these are the names of the children of Israel who went into Egypt. (They are Jacob and his descendants.)
Reuben was Jacobās first son. 9Reubenās sons were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron and Carmi.
10Simeonās sons were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar and Shaul. (Shaul was Simeonās son by a Canaanite woman.)
11Leviās sons were Gershon, Kohath and Merari.
12Judahās sons were Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez and Zerah. (But Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan.) Perezās sons were Hezron and Hamul.
13Issacharās sons were Tola, Puah, Jashub and Shimron.
14Zebulunās sons were Sered, Elon and Jahleel.
15These are the sons of Leah and Jacob born in Northwest Mesopotamia. His daughter Dinah was also born there. There were 33 persons in this part of Jacobās family.
16Gadās sons were Zephon, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.
17Asherās sons were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah. Their sister was Serah. Beriahās sons were Heber and Malkiel.
18These are Jacobās sons by Zilpah. She was the slave girl whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah. There were 16 persons in this part of Jacobās family.
19The sons of Jacobās wife Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin. 20In Egypt, Joseph became the father of Manasseh and Ephraim by his wife Asenath. She was the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.
21Benjaminās sons were Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.
22These are the sons of Jacob by his wife Rachel. There were 14 persons in this part of Jacobās family.
23Danās son was Hushim.
24Naphtaliās sons were Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem.
25These are Jacobās sons by Bilhah. She was the slave girl whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel. There were 7 persons in this part of Jacobās family.
26So the total number of Jacobās direct descendants who went to Egypt was 66. (The wives of Jacobās sons were not counted in this number.) 27Joseph had 2 sons born in Egypt. So the total number in the family of Jacob in Egypt was 70.
Jacob Arrives in Egypt
28Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to see Joseph in Goshen. Then Jacob and his people came into the land of Goshen. 29Joseph prepared his chariot and went to meet his father Israel in Goshen. As soon as Joseph saw his father, he hugged his neck. And he cried there for a long time.
30Then Israel said to Joseph, āNow I am ready to die. I have seen your face. And I know that you are still alive.ā
31Joseph said to his brothers and his fatherās family, āI will go and tell the king you are here. I will say, āMy brothers and my fatherās family have left the land of Canaan. They have come here to me. 32They are shepherds and take care of farm animals. And they have brought their flocks and their herds and everything they own with them.ā 33When the king calls you, he will ask, āWhat work do you do?ā 34This is what you should tell him: āWe, your servants, have taken care of farm animals all our lives. Our ancestors did the same thing.ā Then the king will allow you to settle in the land of Goshen. This is away from the Egyptians. They donāt like to be near shepherds.ā

Genesis 46
46
Jacob Moves to Egypt
1So Israel set out with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. 2God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, āJacob, Jacob.ā And he said, āHere I am.ā 3He said, āI am God, the God of your father; do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there. 4I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph will close your eyes.ā
5Then Jacob arose from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob and their little ones and their wives in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. 6They took their livestock and their property, which they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and came to Egypt, Jacob and all his descendants with him: 7his sons and his grandsons with him, his daughters and his granddaughters, and all his descendants he brought with him to Egypt.
Those Who Came to Egypt
8Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, Jacob and his sons, who went to Egypt: Reuben, Jacobās firstborn. 9The sons of Reuben: Hanoch and Pallu and Hezron and Carmi. 10The sons of Simeon: Jemuel and Jamin and Ohad and Jachin and Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. 11The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 12The sons of Judah: Er and Onan and Shelah and Perez and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 13The sons of Issachar: Tola and Puvvah and Iob and Shimron. 14The sons of Zebulun: Sered and Elon and Jahleel. 15These are the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan-aram, with his daughter Dinah; all his sons and his daughters numbered thirty-three. 16The sons of Gad: Ziphion and Haggi, Shuni and Ezbon, Eri and Arodi and Areli. 17The sons of Asher: Imnah and Ishvah and Ishvi and Beriah and their sister Serah. And the sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel. 18These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah; and she bore to Jacob these sixteen persons. 19The sons of Jacobās wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. 20Now to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him. 21The sons of Benjamin: Bela and Becher and Ashbel, Gera and Naaman, Ehi and Rosh, Muppim and Huppim and Ard. 22These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob; there were fourteen persons in all. 23The sons of Dan: Hushim. 24The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel and Guni and Jezer and Shillem. 25These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel, and she bore these to Jacob; there were seven persons in all. 26All the persons belonging to Jacob, who came to Egypt, his direct descendants, not including the wives of Jacobās sons, were sixty-six persons in all, 27and the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt were two; all the persons of the house of Jacob, who came to Egypt, were seventy.
28Now he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to point out the way before him to Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen. 29Joseph prepared his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel; as soon as he appeared before him, he fell on his neck and wept on his neck a long time. 30Then Israel said to Joseph, āNow let me die, since I have seen your face, that you are still alive.ā 31Joseph said to his brothers and to his fatherās household, āI will go up and tell Pharaoh, and will say to him, āMy brothers and my fatherās household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me; 32and the men are shepherds, for they have been keepers of livestock; and they have brought their flocks and their herds and all that they have.ā 33When Pharaoh calls you and says, āWhat is your occupation?ā 34you shall say, āYour servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,ā that you may live in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is loathsome to the Egyptians.ā
