Mattityahu (Mat) 22

1Yeshua again used parables in speaking to them: 2“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding feast for his son, 3but when he sent his slaves to summon the invited guests to the wedding, they refused to come. 4So he sent some more slaves, instructing them to tell the guests, ‘Look, I’ve prepared my banquet, I’ve slaughtered my bulls and my fattened cattle, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding!’ 5But they weren’t interested and went off, one to his farm, another to his business; 6and the rest grabbed his slaves, mistreated them and killed them. 7The king was furious and sent his soldiers, who killed those murderers and burned down their city.
8“Then he said to his slaves, ‘Well, the wedding feast is ready; but the ones who were invited didn’t deserve it. 9So go out to the street-corners and invite to the banquet as many as you find.’ 10The slaves went out into the streets, gathered all the people they could find, the bad along with the good; and the wedding hall was filled with guests.
11“Now when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who wasn’t dressed for a wedding; so he asked him, 12‘Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ The man was speechless. 13Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him outside in the dark!’ In that place people will wail and grind their teeth, 14for many are invited, but few are chosen.”
15Then the P’rushim went away and put together a plan to trap Yeshua with his own words. 16They sent him some of their talmidim and some members of Herod’s party. They said, “Rabbi, we know that you tell the truth and really teach what God’s way is. You aren’t concerned with what other people think about you, since you pay no attention to a person’s status. 17So tell us your opinion: does Torah permit paying taxes to the Roman Emperor or not?” 18Yeshua, however, knowing their malicious intent, said, “You hypocrites! Why are you trying to trap me? 19Show me the coin used to pay the tax!” They brought him a denarius; 20and he asked them, “Whose name and picture are these?” 21“The Emperor’s,” they replied. Yeshua said to them, “Nu, give the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor. And give to God what belongs to God!” 22On hearing this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.
23That same day, some Tz’dukim came to him. They are the ones who say there is no such thing as resurrection, so they put to him a sh’eilah: 24“Rabbi, Moshe said, ‘If a man dies childless, his brother must marry his widow and have children to preserve the man’s family line.’ 25There were seven brothers. The first one married and then died; and since he had no children, he left his widow to his brother. 26The same thing happened to the second brother, and the third, and finally to all seven. 27After them all, the woman died. 28Now in the Resurrection — of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all married her.”
29Yeshua answered them, “The reason you go astray is that you are ignorant both of the Tanakh and of the power of God. 30For in the Resurrection, neither men nor women will marry; rather, they will be like angels in heaven. 31And as for whether the dead are resurrected, haven’t you read what God said to you, 32‘I am the God of Avraham, the God of Yitz’chak and the God of Ya‘akov’? He is God not of the dead but of the living!”
33When the crowds heard how he taught, they were astounded; 34but when the P’rushim learned that he had silenced the Tz’dukim, they got together, 35and one of them who was a Torah expert asked a sh’eilah to trap him: 36“Rabbi, which of the mitzvot in the Torah is the most important?” 37He told him, “‘You are to love Adonai your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.’ 38This is the greatest and most important mitzvah. 39And a second is similar to it, ‘You are to love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40All of the Torah and the Prophets are dependent on these two mitzvot.”
41Then, turning to the assembled P’rushim, Yeshua put a sh’eilah to them: 42“Tell me your view concerning the Messiah: whose son is he?” They said to him, “David’s.” 43“Then how is it,” he asked them, “that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord,’ when he says,
44‘Adonai said to my Lord,
“Sit here at my right hand
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?
45If David thus calls him ‘Lord,’ how is he his son?” 46No one could think of anything to say in reply; and from that day on, no one dared put to him another sh’eilah.

1Yeshua answered and spoke to them again in parables, saying, 2“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king, who made a wedding feast for his son, 3and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. 4Again he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner. My cattle and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding feast!”’ 5But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise; 6and the rest grabbed his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. 7When the king heard that, he was angry, and sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
8 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited weren’t worthy. 9Go therefore to the intersections of the highways, and as many as you may find, invite to the wedding feast.’ 10Those servants went out into the highways and gathered together as many as they found, both bad and good. The wedding was filled with guests.
11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who didn’t have on wedding clothing, 12and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here not wearing wedding clothing?’ He was speechless. 13Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness. That is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.’ 14For many are called, but few chosen.”
15 Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how they might entrap him in his talk. 16They sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Rabbi, we know that you are honest, and teach the way of God in truth, no matter whom you teach; for you aren’t partial to anyone. 17Tell us therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
18 But Yeshua perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test me, you hypocrites? 19Show me the tax money.”
They brought to him a denarius.
20 He asked them, “Whose is this image and inscription?”
21 They said to him, “Caesar’s.”
Then he said to them, “Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
22 When they heard it, they marveled, and left him and went away.
23 On that day Sadducees (those who say that there is no resurrection) came to him. They asked him, 24saying, “Rabbi, Moses said, ‘If a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring#22:24 or, seed for his brother.’ 25Now there were with us seven brothers. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. 26In the same way, the second also, and the third, to the seventh. 27After them all, the woman died. 28In the resurrection therefore, whose wife will she be of the seven? For they all had her.”
29 But Yeshua answered them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God. 30For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like God’s angels in heaven. 31But concerning the resurrection of the dead, haven’t you read that which was spoken to you by God, saying, 32‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?#Exodus 3:6 God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
33 When the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
34 But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered themselves together. 35One of them, a Torah scholar, asked him a question, testing him. 36“Rabbi, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”
37Yeshua said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’#Deuteronomy 6:5 38This is the first and great commandment. 39A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’#Leviticus 19:18 40The whole Torah and the Prophets depend on these two commandments.”
41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Yeshua asked them a question, 42saying, “What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?”
They said to him, “Of David.”
43 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,
44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
sit on my right hand,
until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet’? #
Psalms 110:1
45 “If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”
46 No one was able to answer him a word, neither did any man dare ask him any more questions from that day forward.
