The Demand for a Sign
Mk 8:11–13; Lk 12:54–56
1#Lk 11:16; Mt 16:6; Jn 8:6The Pharisees and Sadducees came and, testing Him, asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.
2He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3#Lk 12:56and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and overcast.’ O you hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. 4A wicked and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” So He left them and departed.
The Yeast of Pharisees and Sadducees
Mk 8:14–21
5But when His disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. 6#Lk 12:1; Mk 8:15Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
7They reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have taken no bread.”
8#Mt 6:30; 8:26But when Jesus perceived it, He said to them, “O you of little faith, why reason among yourselves, that it is because you have brought no bread? 9#Mt 14:17–21Do you not yet understand or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you collected? 10#Mt 15:34–38Or the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many baskets you collected? 11#Mt 16:6How is it that you do not understand that I spoke to you not concerning bread, but that you should beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees?” 12Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Peter’s Declaration About Jesus
Mk 8:27–30; Lk 9:18–21
13#Lk 9:18–20; Mt 8:20When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”
14#Mt 14:2; Mk 6:15They said, “Some say that You are John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
16#Ps 42:2; Jn 11:27Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17#Gal 1:16; Jn 1:42; 21:15–17Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18#Jn 1:42; Job 38:17And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19#Mt 18:18; Isa 22:22; Jn 20:23I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20#Mk 8:30; Lk 9:21Then He commanded His disciples to tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.
Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection
Mk 8:31–9:1; Lk 9:22–27
21#Mt 17:22–23; 27:63; 17:12From that time on, Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised on the third day.
22Then Peter took Him and began rebuking Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord! This shall not happen to You.”
23#Mt 4:10; Mk 8:33But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things that are of God, but those that are of men.”
24#Mt 10:38; Lk 14:27Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25#Mt 10:39; Jn 12:25For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26#Ps 49:7–8; Lk 12:20For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27#Ro 2:6; 2Co 5:10For the Son of Man shall come with His angels in the glory of His Father, and then He will repay every man according to his works. 28#Mt 10:23; 26:64Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

The Leaders Ask for a Miracle
1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus, wanting to trick him. So they asked him to show them a miracle from God.
2Jesus answered, “At sunset you say we will have good weather, because the sky is red. 3And in the morning you say that it will be a rainy day, because the sky is dark and red. You see these signs in the sky and know what they mean. In the same way, you see the things that I am doing now, but you don’t know their meaning. 4Evil and sinful people ask for a miracle as a sign, but they will not be given any sign, except the sign of Jonah.” Then Jesus left them and went away.
Guard Against Wrong Teachings
5Jesus’ followers went across the lake, but they had forgotten to bring bread. 6Jesus said to them, “Be careful! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
7His followers discussed the meaning of this, saying, “He said this because we forgot to bring bread.”
8Knowing what they were talking about, Jesus asked them, “Why are you talking about not having bread? Your faith is small. 9Do you still not understand? Remember the five loaves of bread that fed the five thousand? And remember that you filled many baskets with the leftovers? 10Or the seven loaves of bread that fed the four thousand and the many baskets you filled then also? 11I was not talking to you about bread. Why don’t you understand that? I am telling you to beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” 12Then the followers understood that Jesus was not telling them to beware of the yeast used in bread but to beware of the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
Peter Says Jesus Is the Christ
13When Jesus came to the area of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his followers, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14They answered, “Some say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah, and still others say you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15Then Jesus asked them, “And who do you say I am?”
16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17Jesus answered, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because no person taught you that. My Father in heaven showed you who I am. 18So I tell you, you are Peter. On this rock I will build my church, and the power of death will not be able to defeat it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; the things you don’t allow on earth will be the things that God does not allow, and the things you allow on earth will be the things that God allows.” 20Then Jesus warned his followers not to tell anyone he was the Christ.
Jesus Says that He Must Die
21From that time on Jesus began telling his followers that he must go to Jerusalem, where the Jewish elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law would make him suffer many things. He told them he must be killed and then be raised from the dead on the third day.
22Peter took Jesus aside and told him not to talk like that. He said, “God save you from those things, Lord! Those things will never happen to you!”
23Then Jesus said to Peter, “Go away from me, Satan! You are not helping me! You don’t care about the things of God, but only about the things people think are important.”
24Then Jesus said to his followers, “If people want to follow me, they must give up the things they want. They must be willing even to give up their lives to follow me. 25Those who want to save their lives will give up true life, and those who give up their lives for me will have true life. 26It is worthless to have the whole world if they lose their souls. They could never pay enough to buy back their souls. 27The Son of Man will come again with his Father’s glory and with his angels. At that time, he will reward them for what they have done. 28I tell you the truth, some people standing here will see the Son of Man coming with his kingdom before they die.”
