Isaiah 52
52
1#Rev 21:27; Ne 11:1; Isa 51:17 Awake, awake!
Put on your strength, O Zion;
put on your beautiful garments,
O Jerusalem, the holy city.
For the uncircumcised and the unclean
will no longer enter you.
2#Isa 51:14; 51:23 Shake yourself from the dust;
arise, O captive Jerusalem.
Loose yourself from the bonds of your neck,
O captive daughter of Zion.
3#Isa 45:13; Ps 44:12For thus says the Lord:
You were sold for nothing,
and you shall be redeemed without money.
4#Ge 46:6For thus says the Lord God:
My people went down at the first into Egypt to sojourn there;
then the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.
5#Ro 2:24Now therefore, what do I have here, says the Lord,
seeing that My people have been taken away for nothing?
Those who rule over them make them wail,
says the Lord,
and My name is continually blasphemed
all day long.
6Therefore, My people shall know My name;
therefore, they shall know in that day
that I am He who does speak:
Here I am.
7#Isa 40:9; Na 1:15; Ps 93:1 How beautiful upon the mountains
are the feet of him who brings good news,
who proclaims peace,
who brings good news of happiness,
who proclaims salvation,
who says to Zion,
“Your God reigns!”
8#Isa 62:6; 1Co 13:12 Your watchmen lift up their voices;
they sing joyfully together;
for they shall see with their own eyes
when the Lord brings Zion back.
9#Isa 51:3; 48:20 Break forth into joy, sing together,
you waste places of Jerusalem.
For the Lord has comforted His people;
He has redeemed Jerusalem.
10#Isa 51:9; Lk 3:6 The Lord has bared His holy arm
in the eyes of all the nations,
and all the ends of the earth shall see
the salvation of our God.
11#Isa 48:20; 2Co 6:17 Depart, depart, go out from there,
touch no unclean thing;
go out of the midst of her; be clean,
you who bear the vessels of the Lord.
12#Ex 12:33; Isa 58:8 For you shall not go out with haste
nor go by flight.
For the Lord will go before you,
and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.
The Suffering Servant
13#Isa 42:1; 9:6–7; 53:10–11 See, My servant shall deal prudently;
he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.
14#Ps 22:15; 22:17 Just as many were astonished at you,
his visage was so marred, more than any man,
and his form more than the sons of men;
15#Isa 49:7; 49:23 so he shall sprinkle many nations.
Kings shall shut their mouths at him;
for that which had not been told them they shall see,
and that which they had not heard they shall consider.

Isaiah 52

Deliverance for Jerusalem
1Wake up, wake up, O Zion!
Clothe yourself with strength.
Put on your beautiful clothes, O holy city of Jerusalem,
for unclean and godless people will enter your gates no longer.
2Rise from the dust, O Jerusalem.
Sit in a place of honor.
Remove the chains of slavery from your neck,
O captive daughter of Zion.
3For this is what the Lord says:
“When I sold you into exile,
I received no payment.
Now I can redeem you
without having to pay for you.”
4This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “Long ago my people chose to live in Egypt. Now they are oppressed by Assyria. 5What is this?” asks the Lord. “Why are my people enslaved again? Those who rule them shout in exultation.#52:5a As in Dead Sea Scrolls; Masoretic Text reads Those who rule them wail. My name is blasphemed all day long.#52:5b Greek version reads The Gentiles continually blaspheme my name because of you. Compare Rom 2:24. 6But I will reveal my name to my people, and they will come to know its power. Then at last they will recognize that I am the one who speaks to them.”
7How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of the messenger who brings good news,
the good news of peace and salvation,
the news that the God of Israel#52:7 Hebrew of Zion. reigns!
8The watchmen shout and sing with joy,
for before their very eyes
they see the Lord returning to Jerusalem.#52:8 Hebrew to Zion.
9Let the ruins of Jerusalem break into joyful song,
for the Lord has comforted his people.
He has redeemed Jerusalem.
10The Lord has demonstrated his holy power
before the eyes of all the nations.
All the ends of the earth will see
the victory of our God.
11Get out! Get out and leave your captivity,
where everything you touch is unclean.
Get out of there and purify yourselves,
you who carry home the sacred objects of the Lord.
12You will not leave in a hurry,
running for your lives.
For the Lord will go ahead of you;
yes, the God of Israel will protect you from behind.
The Lord’s Suffering Servant
13See, my servant will prosper;
he will be highly exalted.
14But many were amazed when they saw him.#52:14 As in Syriac version; Hebrew reads you.
His face was so disfigured he seemed hardly human,
and from his appearance, one would scarcely know he was a man.
15And he will startle#52:15a Or cleanse. many nations.
Kings will stand speechless in his presence.
For they will see what they had not been told;
they will understand what they had not heard about.#52:15b Greek version reads Those who have never been told about him will see, / and those who have never heard of him will understand. Compare Rom 15:21.
